I'm planning a 1-2 day vacation in March for my partner's birthday weekend.. I'm wondering if Block Island is an option during the late winter months? Is everything going to be dead? Don't particularly want crowds, just want the option to go to a restaurant on a Friday evening. Block Island is unique, which is what i'm looking for.

maybe? best to call around to see what's open. if i recall only poor peoples pub is open in winter. check out blue dory inn as place to stay, they'll know for sure what's open as well.

There's way more than just PPP open in the winter. Eli's & Kimberly's and others too.

Id say 100% / ferry will be cold but it'll be quiet and beautiful. Mohegan bluffs beach is a must too - your options for food and drink will be limited though

I think it would be a fun little trip. Block Island is a totally different world when it's not filled with SUVs from the tri-state area.

There is a handful of good year round restaurants in Old Harbor. Flying is a cool option too, especially for a special occasion. It's a little pricey but the view can't be beat (http://blockislandsairline.com/index.php/block-island-flights/).

Honestly, the little weekend we spent on Block Island even in early May one year was not good. Still felt like winter there. Mostly closed, very windy, very cold, hard to get around. We had a fun enough time with our couple friends but would never do it again—not for the high cost hotel.

Do this ONLY if enjoying ocean vistas in maximum solitude while properly bundled up against wind and maybe sleet etc. is your idea of a special day.

Block Island doesn’t have a ton of restaurants to begin with so I’d figure out which ones are open before you go. Nantucket/Martha’s Vineyard would have more options (ie restaurants, lodging and things like the whaling museum)….it just depends on what you’re looking for/to do

The Barn at The Spring House is definitely open for dinner on the weekends.

I've been in winter and had a great time as long as you aren't there to do anything like shops. Just be aware that if the ferry shuts down, you will need to find a contingency plan. When I went, there was one last ferry for the day before they were cancelled for weather (it wasn't snow but something else like high wind). March is still fair game here for crappy weather in a bad year.

I should also say I paid next to nothing for accommodations since it was off-season. It probably wouldn't be worth it if you are still getting charged $400+ a night.
