Yeah a lot of grocery options in a small area now. Whole Foods, Eastside, and TJ's. I'm surprised TJ's would take away from Eastside though. Seems like a different clientele.
I used to go to East Side Marketplace - they sold me spoiled meat on several occasions, and their prices are absurd.
I'm sorry that it's effecting your job hours but the marketplace isn't doing well because it's not competitive in terms of pricing and quality.
Eastside Market kinda sucks, it's just Stop and Shop but more expensive
Stop and Shop itself is expensive
I alternate between Trader Joes and East Side Market. My bill at Trader Joe's is usually about half of what it is at ESM. Maybe they should make their prices somewhat competitive. It's not like they're a mom & pop grocery store. They're owned by freaking Stop & Shop.
Yeah, East Side Market is like my 4th choice in the area. We do our regular shopping at Market Basket in Attleboro and sometimes go to Whole Foods and TJ’s now.
I’m sorry for you and the other workers at East Side, but it’s just not that good by comparison.
Ever since I saw this graphic, it all made sense: https://www.checkbook.org/boston-area/supermarkets/articles/Which-Grocery-Stores-Offer-the-Best-Prices-and-Quality-2057
Stop and Shop is inferior in every way to Market Basket and Whole Foods. It’s more expensive than MB and barely cheaper than WF.
Location and a bit cheaper than WF seems about the only advantage East Side had, and now TJ’s came in. RIP
When you union bust like trader Joe's you can lower your prices.
I talked to someone who works at stop and shop on Branch, he said Marketbasket is kicking their ass with prices below profit margins.
That’s funny, I went to TJ’s for the first time last week and hated it. I’ve always gone to Eastside and I’ll be going back next week. TJ’s was hard to get to, with bad parking, and a cramped and overcrowded store. Eastside all the way.
Is Eastside Market still owned by the same people that own of Stop and Shop?

Yeah I went to Eastside Market once when I moved.
The food expiration dates were sketchily close (even on dry food) and it was like $6 for a small box of Frosted Flakes…precovid. Most expensive supermarket I’ve been to.
If it actually had stop n shop prices, it would be 10x better. And it would mean the shelves may actually have movement…
It’s not that TJ is cheap. It’s more so Eastside market is ridiculously overpriced.
I prob worked there with you. They've been sweating since they announced TJ's opening back when Lynne was managing in 2020/2021. I got out ahead of the impending doom. They knew TJ's was going to tap into their market share. I can totally see them shutting down Stop and Shops all over RI/MA/CT due to Market Basket presence and dominating market share as well. The one in Johnston has tanked sales in surrounding Cranston/ Johnston S&S stores. Dont be afraid to leave that shithole. There are far better opportunities out there.
Congrats on voluntarily getting hosed lol
It’s not like TJ is the only alternative….
To me TJ's is life changing since it's a short walk away. Otherwise I'd probably wouldn't go tbh
Since East Side Market got bought by Stop & Shop it went downhill. Simply no reason to go there.
East side market used to be dope until stop and shop bought it. Now it’s just a reskinned stop and shop with somehow even more expensive product
Sounds like it's time to apply for a job at TJ's
Eastside Marketplace was good before Stop and Shop bought it. The Whole Foods over there was good until Amazon bought it and they got rid of the cafe seating.
Or you think it's overpriced because you are used to places that undercharge because they don't pay thier employees fair wages.
Never had an issue parking at TJ's... Not sure what you mean because I've gone during the rush and early in the afternoon and it's fine.
Yes this just shows how inconsistent people can be especially on this sub, at least in the aggregate. There will be a thousand upvotes for something like Seven Stars unionizing. Then when there's an opportunity to shop at a unionized supermarket everyone complains that it's too expensive so why would they do that when Whole Foods (AMZN) is down the street?
TJ's has a great selection of frozen foods. That's why people like it.
I only go to Eastside because it’s so close, the prices are ridiculous. I walk out of there questioning my choice every time lol. Sorry about your job though…but I’d start looking for a new one.
I haven’t been to TJs yet because the thought of the parking brings me great stress. The plus side to Eastside is there’s never anyone there!
I wish MB wasn’t so insanely busy though. Love their prices but I usually go somewhere else for an easier shopping experience.
Eastside needs that competition. It's stop + shop quality with a premium name and prices -- totally undeserved. Would rather go to Whole Foods or MB -- or a proper S+S.
Yes that's the punchline lol
So convenient, and some things are incredibly cheap.
Unique products, good prices, and their flower section sucks me in every time.
I really wish Dave’s had bought East Side Market.
Yeah no, it’s overpriced. And full of expired food.
Hi, I used to work at Eastside Marketplace, when I quit, I stopped going all together and started going to Trader Joes. It really has gone downhill :(
Tbh I mainly shop at Hannaford because even though it’s a few cents more than Market Basket, a busy day there is a mild day at MB. I pay for the quiet LOL
And some things are bad. I get some very specific things at TJs (snacks mostly) but every thing else at stop and shop or WF. Wish there was a closer MB for sure!! Eastside market when it was independent was so good it just gets worse every time I go now (which is rare).

It would help if east side marketplace had more competitive prices. When every item is a couple dollars more than elsewhere, it’s not hard to see why sales would go down. I hope you get more hours, and I hope management can help make it a better store to shop at.
Business do be like that. The fact remains that your owners are tanking their store into the ground, and I'm sorry that your livelihood is in the crosshairs because of it.
ESM looked dogged-out and dirty the last time I went a few weeks ago. Employees looked the other way when you approach or just walk by. I made a lap in there and walked right over to WF… which actually seems LESS expensive (store brand stuff) and better quality.
Oh this is amazing! Nice to see confirmation that the stores I ended up shopping at are the best options. I’m surprised to see how much more expensive it can get than shaw’s honestly.
Sounds like market basket has a better supply chain, it seems unlikely that they are making negative profits.

Have you tried shopping at stop and shop lately? I find their prices ridiculously high. There are things I used to get at Walmart when I was there because they were a little cheaper, but if I was already at stop and shop I'd get it anyway and pay a bit more for the convenience. Now Walmart is literally half the price. It's a little nuts.
Go apply there! They pay pretty well and my bf liked working there over the holidays.
Market basket gang rise up
That’s my only complaint about them. I try to go during the less busy hours but even when it’s busy it’s still worth it because their prices are insanely good.

There’s a hannaford in ri??
This. I use S&S because they're a union store. I can afford to vote with my wallet a little, so I do. Stuff that I can get cheaper elsewhere I get elsewhere. I recognize the luck in that, but also like. I thought RI was the cradle of solidarity
TJs is for snacks only.
It'll be the end of alot of supermarket chains,
I left in March 22. Dont be afraid to seek better opportunities elsewhere. Good luck 👍.
Was that on the table back then? Or just your personal wish, either way it would have been incredible

Fundy is an aquired taste 👌
Just my personal wish. I want a Dave’s to open in Providence so badly.
I mean they're cutting their employees hours so maybe that's not the best argument.

Nooooooo :( I like east side market place! Even though it’s just mini stop and shop!
TJ definitely brings in a lot of people, but I personally don’t see the appeal?
