Looking for suggestions when jazz is performed and people come to listen rather than talk above it.

Many years there was a bar calles Allery’s on S. Main. It was an beautiful old school venue with lots of really good jazz…. Greg Abote, Art Farmer…. People came, had some cocktails and listened.

Tuesday nights at Nick-A-Nee's. Music 8ish. Run by RI Music Hall of Famer Marty Ballou. Taco Tuesday specials are limited, but really good. "A heavenly dive bar". The best. Don't tell anyone.

Also, 4th Sundays at Nick's. 4-7pm. Great time slot, if you asked me.

The Royal Bobcat Wed nights. Very cool cocktail bar. Speakeasy vibe. Don't tell anyone.

Courtland Club. Google it.

I don't go to Nick's on Fri or Sat. The crowd is more respectful on Tuesdays. Maybe older, too. Marty is an A-list bass player, and only invites other A-listers. I think we're incredibly lucky that he chooses to play there.

Sunday afternoons are pretty chill. Drummer Max Goldman runs a good show.

Both are also nice guys, too. Tip the band and say hello.

Courtland Club! They do jazz every Sunday. My wife and I have gone a few times and it’s always great. People are really attentive and the players are all tight.

What time do the acts go on?

They have two sets - one starts around 6, the other after 8. We usually reserve a spot for one set or the other. If you reserve a table you’ll likely be seated at a table near where the band is playing.

Courtland Club Sunday nights. Reserve online with a refundable $20 deposit. Great food and drinks, and the place is small and very intimate. Amazing jazz players. You won’t hear any voices over the music, trust me.
