Lmao a “dive themed bar” you’re either a dive or your not 😂😂😂

In 2023, not really. Most places that people call dives or dive-y have elements of that definition but they ultimately aren't really dives. It became hip and stylish to be sort of a dive bar over the last 20 years. Now, it's more of a chosen aesthetic that places have.

Nik a Nees has continuously been the best DiveBar in RI since the'80's

Proof-Variation7005 t1_jadqq0a wrote

yeah, i'd give em that title. they far predate the more modern era where anything that isn't a super fancy place gets called a dive

How do you fake being a dive bar?

Born-Yesterday-8602 t1_jac7hqa wrote

Your parents who own the building put up the money so you can cosplay being poor/divey for some reason, it’s fortnight all over again 😭

BuffaloBill72 t1_jacm2ma wrote

Yeahhhh but the peeps who took this over aren't trust fund kids. They're from the neighborhood

11

Born-Yesterday-8602 t1_jacojci wrote

“From the neighborhood” or transplants form another city who’ve no connections to the west side of PVD whatsoever?

EerieDayze t1_jacq5uk wrote

Whoa a lot of assumptions lol Lived in the west end for years, hard workers, and nice people opening a neighborhood bar. Let's show some support 😀

17

Born-Yesterday-8602 t1_jacqmv7 wrote

Not assuming, just asking, because that seems to be the norm with Westend businesses lately

Confident_Slip1208 t1_jac7ygi wrote

I didn’t think Fortnight was going for the divey thing. Were they?

10

Born-Yesterday-8602 t1_jacgo9i wrote

No just a bunch of kids cosplaying as poor and marginalized to sell wine under the guise on anti capitalist anarchism while literally being the products of trust fund families

Engels was a trust fund baby. If trust fund kids want to use their wealth to help the cause, more power to them the proletariat.

Cole3823 t1_jacj0cz wrote

How is opening a wine bar and pretending to not be rich "helping the cause".

420foreverandalways t1_jacl6rn wrote

Did he hurt you? You seem to have a grudge. Or more likely, you just saw some people you didn't like the look of, and had fun building characters to hate in your head.

I never went, but I know some queers who liked it. As far as helping the cause, co-ops are a form of business ownership that mitigates the harms of capitalism, since it places ownership/control with the workers. Richard Wolf is probably the most vocal proponent of co-ops, so look him up if you want more info. (I'm not really here to debate economics, but you asked)

Cole3823 t1_jaclgpx wrote

I've never been and don't even know anything about the owners . I was more questioning how the commenter thinks the owners are anything like engels

1

WhackedOnWhackedOff t1_jaczfii wrote

Was that really what Fortnight was? And why’d they close? Just generally unsustainable to have a hipster wine bar?

2

Born-Yesterday-8602 t1_jaczn6r wrote

Yea , also doesn’t help that the dude who had control of all the finances was a general creep and took advantage of young girls all the time, now he’s living the life at Michelin starred restaurants and renting our entire villas in southern Cali (according to his instagram)

5

lestermagnum t1_jadjavi wrote

Rumor is Fortnight closed abruptly because of sexual assault / harassment allegations against the owner.

From day 1 you hire an actor to play a local drunk “Sammy” who has been coming there for years, hates all these kids that have started coming there. Every so often you might get lucky and see the bartender kick Sammy out “That’s it Sammy! Get the fuck out! I don’t want to see you in here again!” He’s a fixture in the corner talking shit and being generally creepy towards any women that come in.

Maleficent_Weird8613 t1_jad780e wrote

Scurvy has done it for years.

5

Markcharles3 t1_jae23ub wrote

I’m sorry, how is scurvy a fake dive bar? Taken over by 3 local punks 15 years ago after it was the worst dive bar (green bar). They decorated how they wanted and only painted the building black. Drinks are cheap and you aren’t going to get some fancy cocktail list.

OctoberRust13 t1_jae9zyr wrote

seriously...anyone calling Nick a Nees a better "dive bar" or anywhere else in this city for that matter, over Scurvy, doesnt know what a dive bar is or has never been there.

5

Markcharles3 t1_jaf16m4 wrote

Right? Nic a nees has windows for Christ’s sake! Proper dive bars should have basement window style windows if any at all. All kidding aside, no one would say that about scurvy if they’d spent any time there.

Ahhh thought it looked familiar. I went there only one time on a whim. The Bruins were playing on a projector screen along with the other TVs in there but they shut it off so they could all watch jeopardy together

mcCheester t1_jacbvgb wrote

Anyone remember the name of the bar that was there before E&O? It was an actual dive bar then, late 1990s. They mainly served Rolling Rock in 7oz bottles. I think it was a guy's name? Jimmy's or Johnny's or something?

Softpipesplayon t1_jact85n wrote

We already have a dive-themed bar, and Scurvy is perfect just as it is.

Yeah, only one dive bar per city is allowed.

6

Proof-Variation7005 t1_jadr7tk wrote

idk if they're reallly faking anything. i think the dive label gets used by other people about them but it's always been a punk rock themed neighborhood bar.
