If nothing else, I have to pay with a verified email address. The impression that page gives is that it's asking for a subscription to read, though as you allude to, a "free" account (collecting a spammable email address) would do. My only visits to the journal's site are when I click links here for more details without noticing where they go. It's not that often—maybe a handful of times over the last six months. As for the paid options, the price there isn't at all competitive.

If you're being asked to register, it's because the website has counted enough views in the past time period (I don't know how long) to ask you to subscribe.

If you're brand new/new browser and click on the story, you should get a "2 free articles left. Create Free Account" notice on the bottom left.

Right now the deal I see is $1 for three months, which is pretty decent.
