I recently looked up some crime stats in a conversation recently and per capita, New England is doing fine. The scary areas currently are in the Midwest.

Cities have higher property crime; mostly theft, but the Midwest is leading in violent and deadly crimes per capita.

I agree, and I feel quite safe in Providence actually. I've walked downtown back to the west end many a late night without an issue.

I walk home or cycle every night and day from the city center to West End, South Side and East Side as part of my routines. It is generally safe here and I lived in 3 cities with 2-5m metro areas prior to here.
