In terms of speed/uptime, nobody else comes close to FIOS. Cox can be fine for a lot of home users but there's some stuff (WFH, gaming, streaming) where their shitty upload speeds will be a problem and they have full or partial (degraded service that still kinda works) outages a LOT more often.

With fios since 2017. I can count the outages I’ve noticed on one hand. With Cox it felt like a monthly occurrence.

I've been using them for like....4 or 5 years now and have had 2 outages.

Both times, the garbage truck's mechanical arm had taken out the wire to the house and it got fixed within a day.

Between outages I couldn't control and times I had to power cycle the modem, I don't think I went more than 2 weeks without having a Cox problem in the previous 6 years.

They've got me hooked enough where, if I had to move, I don't think I'd go somewhere that didn't have FIOS. It's a dealbreaker

To be clear, Cox can definitely be cheaper and probably fine for a lot of people. It totally depends on need and what matters. I look at it from the lens of quality/reliability because of personal/professional needs, but that isn't for everyone.

I pay for $54.99 for the "Fios Internet 100/100." Used to be $40 for the first year. Rarely have outages. Is plenty fast.

Edit: I don't pay rental fees for equipment. Bought my own router and they don't charge for the modem.

You should be able to upgrade it on the website to 200/200 for the same price.

I'll just add fuck Cox (huehue) as well. Had them while in PVD for a couple years and I've never had a worse ISP in the United States. Yes it was cheaper than Verizon (although only marginally for the plan we had) but we'd lose service ALL THE TIME. We lived in a townhouse and the other two units had verizon and would never lose service when we did. Little windy in the winter - no internet for 12 hours, a particularly rainy spring day - bye bye internet, oh its august and its hot - no internet for you. It happened all the time, probably 20+ times throughout the year (we'd still have power just no internet), and it would always last a minimum of 4-5 hours before service would be restored. They never sent anybody out to fix anything at our place as we were told it was always "on their end" and related to larger infrastructure breakdowns.

Verizon can be real scummy about pricing, definitely check if there are any discounts you might be eligible for (if you have verizon for your cell service) as they will NOT automatically apply the discount, you literally have to "apply" for it. That being said, the service has always been as advertised with upload/download speeds as expected. Plus, after having verizon for 4+ years now in RI (across 2 different residences) I can't remember a single instance where we lost service (aside from when we lost power all together)

I’ve used Cox for years. We pay about $55 a month in my apartment. Can’t really give you technical details of my plan bc I took it over from a roommate who moved out years ago, but have had 3 people living in the apartment using phones, laptops and TV’s on the wifi simultaneously with no issues.

Thanks for the rec. I pay double for my plan and don’t think it’s worth it.

What's the speed of your plan? Sometimes you have to cancel and restart service to get the best price.

skythom7 t1_jdf1sas wrote

Or threaten to cancel and they’ll probably cut you a deal lol

Not always, last time I had to restart service under a new account since it was an online only price.

We have Verizon and Cox, that seems to be the only two choices. Having had both, Verizon is superior by far. By the end, Cox was getting so bad the router had to be restarted at least once a day. What a pain in the ass. Yeah, Verizon probably sucks in other ways but in how the internet connects and works, it's the best.

I've had Verizon Fios for about 2+ years and LOVE IT. I pay $40/mo (I use all my own equipment) for the 200/200 tier but they provision it at 300/300. It's rock solid day in / day out. Before Fios, I had Cox and paid around $70/mo for much lower speeds particularly on uploads.

...because Fuck Verizon why? What seems to be the issue you are having with them? Cox is no better in terms of billing, in terms of reliability Verizon is much more reliable simply based on how a Fiber Network works. Cox is very unreliable and subject to many issues that can affect speed. In the 15+ years I have had FIOS I have never had an outage more than an hour or so. Friends that had Cox in the area were constantly having issues with the service.

The price is about the same for asymetrical speeds with Cox. Switching will also require a number of equipment changes.
