If you are already local, it may be worth it to take a walk around neighborhoods you're interested in and look for "For Rent" signs. There's such high demand that some property owners won't even bother listing on websites.

This is how I landed a big 2br in Hope Village for $1400. Went for a walk in the hood I wanted to live in and called the numbers on the signs.

I wonder how common that is. I have heard similar anecdotes a couple times recently, people deliberately keeping listings offline to avoid non-locals, investors, floods of requests, etc.

I remember maybe seeing one once. Not sure how efficient it would be wondering around looking for them.

Hah yeah, can't imagine that would be the wisest approach. But then again, those word-of-mouth places with actually decent landlords could save you hundreds of dollars every month over the well-advertised "market price" places, so it could be worth some real time investment. But, again, I know nothing beyond a couple secondhand stories.
