hey, great job by our moderators booting that troll but it seems as though he's just doing the same garbage or has influenced copycats... any chance we can just enforce a rule where you at least have to post some body copy when you post a link? if not, can we just blacklist that garbage site?

i saw someone mentioning a limit of one post per week - I would rather have that than some kind of curation of what sources are allowed. i want diversity of opinion, even if I don’t agree with it - I just don’t want it spammed.

ryanfingawesome OP t1_iqx5eds wrote

its not a matter of diversity in opinion, any time you see these links posted there is no opinion. there isnt even body copy in the posting on here, just a link. theyre doing it to farm clicks, its the definition of spam posting.

More than that the guy was a straight fascist. One of his posts was saying that the genocide of Native Americans was justified because of the "civilization" that was brought. That guy went on way too long, mods need to get on the ball in the future.

Dopey-NipNips t1_iqzx4xx wrote

The mods are right wingers who will ban YOU for civility but let these shitbirds spam the sub because the mods agree with their racism hatred and fear mongering

werewolfmanjack t1_iqx71ni wrote

That’s fair, I think limiting their ability to post would help that issue. I also think more vigilant moderation would help.

Or he doesn't know how to post and doesn't understand that it's helpful to post a subject along with your link... Let's all try to refrain from censorship, using the words of the year like 'fascist' to describe someone's behavior. You just come across like a dumb american

I think this is definitely the way to go. It's not right to censor this website, no matter how annoying it is

They constantly deny it, yet stupidly use their alts to argue their case in threads like these and out themselves. What an absolute clown.

The troll was banned from reddit as a whole, not the subreddit. Did the moderators here have anything to do with that?

I don't think we should ban GoLocalProv, or really any news site. It's a shit tabloid but it's still a source for relevant news, sometimes. Their bias and lack of quality is clear just by reading them. And I think it should be pointed out in the comments whenever possible, much like I wish folks would do when links to Sinclair media's WJAR are posted.

I do think a rule similar to r/RhodeIsland where you have to keep the original headline in order to prevent editorializing would be nice.

Bro.... Those are great arguments for banning that publication. If it's bullshit from first glance, why are we obligated to debate it among ourselves?

rustybullrake t1_iqz9ffc wrote

>why are we obligated to debate it among ourselves?

First, I think it's important to cultivate critical thinking skills and be able to independently weigh the credibility of articles, authors, and sources linked here, rather than relying on others to do it. I think discussing the credibility of a given source in the comments is far better than sources being blacklisted outright.

Second, blacklisting is how you end up with echo chambers. I'd much rather be able to know what folks who read GoLocalProv uncritically are thinking and talking about than only see links that adhere to a particular point of view or ideology.

Third, the mods are never going to blacklist GoLocalProv. Or any other news source. I guarantee it. There aren't going to be any changes made to the way news and articles are posted here, at least not as a result of this discussion.

While I hate the GLP posts that are spammed on this sub, I’m hesitant to support out-right banned a news source. Yea, it’s a shitty new source. Yea, it seems to have a lot of support from extremely far-right thinkers. But… until it starts out-right being a news source that is visibly trying to stir up toxic chaos, I don’t wanna ban it. If there’s evidence that GLP has already crossed this line, please let me know!

Maybe in the meantime, we could have an once- or twice-weekly date that allows news postings?

yajanikos t1_iqxc8rt wrote

If I wanted to read their articles or get info from them - I would visit their site directly, I don’t need it cross posted on Reddit

What is the deal with GLP anyway? Is like our version of the Boston Herlad?

4

ryanfingawesome OP t1_iqx151x wrote

absolutely not, its our version of one of those garbage main street media websites that popped up in the late aughts early 10s. it just regurgitates AP stories so it can sell ads.

23

werewolfmanjack t1_iqx7v13 wrote

I did just visit their actual page… lol yeah accurate description. the super market mailers have better graphic design and layout. it hurts to look at.

7

Proof-Variation7005 t1_iqx8c63 wrote

That's insulting to the Herald almost. They at least had a catchy jingle, a print edition, and writers who are willing to put their names on a byline.

They do share the same tabloidy sensationalist approach to things but GoLocalProv really steps up the game where they clearly have targets and approach it in a way that is just hard to call real journalism. A few years ago, someone splashed some paint on a Columbus statue and they wrote a whole-ass article because one of their former writers that occasionally freelanced music reviews for the ProJo had a Facebook post joking about it.

It's pretty clear who they pick and choose as their targets and the coverage is beyond slanted on anything political.

Crime-wise, they'll jump on anything the police department feeds them and usually limit their reporting to the initial details that the police email them and no real follow-up or actual reporting.

What’s the issue with the golocal posts? I’m not sure what they even are

2

FasterThanJaws t1_iqxaqsi wrote

It's poorly copy-pasted news from other sites. And the comments under most posts there tend to be racist/violent (MAGA Boomers from Facebook). Although I just checked some articles and it seems like comments are disabled. Don't know how long that's been like that, but it's for the better.

Most news articles posted here from reputable sources are locked behind a paywall. So you have to rely on that author or someone with a subscription to post the text in the comments. For that reason, it's acceptable enough to me. Poorly edited news about Providence is still better than nothing, as long as I can actually read it.

That said, GoLocal doesn't skew left when it comes to politics, and that's why people here actually hate it. And it's usually very outspoken right wing people posting these links, which adds fuel to the fire.

Also I'm having a laugh at the fact that you're downvoted for asking a simple question. This sub is not friendly to people who don't think/know the same things that they do.

11

littylikeatit t1_iqxcdmt wrote

So are the news reports false? Or just not aligning with how people think? If they are an inconvenient truth then I think people need to ignore them or instigate discussion. If the news is false I would say to ban it

−4

captainsaltyballs t1_iqxkpow wrote

The news is not false. I’ve seen people on here calling it fear mongering since a specific user posts every crime report.

I posted about gun shots into the building that I lived next to before. I originally came here looking for information because I figured this sub was for community questions. It was upvoted, I guess because it wasn’t GoLocalProv, but it seems like that information is something people want to see.

I might be missing what everyone is upset about, but banning a domain is silly on a board that has community voting. That’s kind of the entire point of it. Only excuse is that this sub is dead as hell so that’s the most of what people are seeing.

6

do_not_engage t1_iqxwl2w wrote

They don't report falsehoods, they report the truth in a very, very surface level biased way.

For example a recent story was that some hero kids got a pedophile teacher arrested by doing all the investigative work themselves, after authorities refused to investigate multiple allegations and reports against him.

The headline and article phrased everything so that if you didn't read carefully you would think the teacher was the victim and the kids were just extremist lefty teenagers looking to attack authority.

realbadaccountant t1_iqxaufq wrote

It’s a poorly sourced, poorly written, and poorly edited local news site.

littylikeatit t1_iqxcfjk wrote

2

realbadaccountant t1_iqxechk wrote

Yes. And yellow journalism. And run of the mill, low quality, clickbait bullshit. And much more.

8

thehillshaveI t1_iqzvwhs wrote

more lazy than false. like a golocal "story" is often a one paragraph statement from the cops

we could get press releases from the providence police department directly without this sub serving as a clickfarm

Some people just hold their personal grudges, for whatever reason. It's totally human, but the rest of the world has no need for your drama especially when they become as obsessive as this. Live and let live, folks. I don't understand why that's so difficult for some.

wafflesandgin t1_iqy9vmn wrote

What about all the journalists who post to farm traffic to their content?

I'm not saying outright ban, but something should be done to limit it. At least the projo & boston globe people don't spam but it's all content behind soft paywalls.

2

anemonemometer t1_iqybabo wrote

I like the idea of requiring commentary and limiting the number of links posted per week. There could also be a thing about if you circumvent the rule with a second account that will result in a ban.
