Came here to say this. I was in this same house on a different floor. I had to get in contact with a lawyer to get out of the lease when there was snow blowing into our apartment after the fire. She tried to make us sign a document basically saying that we wouldn't go after her for damages and when I refused to sign it, she tried to charge us around $6000 dollars for moving out. The apartment was unlivable and we had to find other lodgings, which she should have paid for, according to the law. The thing that was my saving grace in this situation was having renter's insurance.

Woah!! That is so awful--I can't believe she tried to charge you 6k to move out of a severely damaged apartment. Sorry this happened to you, and I'm glad you had renter's insurance (also, a good reminder for me to sign up for that right now!)
