Most likely are going to commit a crime with your plates on a different car.

They may be planning to use them to commit a larger crime. I would file a police report ASAP so they know if your plates come up soon that they’re not attached to your vehicle.

I’d probably call the cops to at least file a report and you’ll probably have to get a DMV appointment

Report this now. Don’t put it off until tomorrow. It could make a difference in preventing a larger crime that you’d get dragged into.

Report it asap. I've heard of stolen plates being used in a crime with a vehicle the same make as the one they stole the plates from. Whenever the crime happens you'll be a scapegoat to slow down the investigation.

OP report it, you're gonna need to anyways to get them replaced. But report them now if you haven't already so you're bit dragged into something like a drive-by or a home invasion or something bad. They might even have a car that looks like yours to pass off as you. Shouldn't take long to report and get the report quickly and easily.

Report it to your dmv, police, and insurance.

This happened to my cousin a super long time ago in Boston. Someone stole one of her plates from the museum parking lot while she was visiting with her son and she didn’t notice. Then got a call super late that night that the plate was found on a car used in some crime.

You can submit an online police report.

https://www.providenceri.gov/police/citizens-online-police-reporting-system/

They could be using them for anything from stealing tools from Home Depot to a drive by shooting so getting that report in before it happens you you don't become a suspect. Then you will need to use that report to go to the DMV and get new plates.

My neighbor got arrested by several state troopers about a week or so ago, the only thing I caught was the staties unscrewing the license plates on the car. It seems to be happening quite a bit, 100% report it stolen. They seem to be figuring it out.

As others have stated, you will want to report this incident quickly to your local police department. You'll need a copy of the police report to obtain a replacement(s). You can find out more here on the DMV website -- https://dmv.ri.gov/registrations-plates-titles/license-plates/lost-or-damaged-plates Please contact the DMV administration using this online form -- https://dmv.ri.gov/locations-hours/questions-feedback if you begin to receive notices for traffic violations (via traffic cameras) as the staff can provide a letter to submit to police/courts to get fines waived.

Just call the police and let them know. Ask them what you should do.

That happened to me too. Before I even knew that it had been done, I got a call from the police telling me that they had found my stolen car. I looked in the driveway and told them my car was sitting there. We figured it out and laughed.

I'd like to offer a different perspective on an option you may consider. Perhaps report it to the police. Not sure if others would agree but that's my $0.02.
