Yes, still a thing in Providence. When you buy a home you send in documents proving you live there - to start getting the homestead tax exemption. I had to show proof again about a year or two ago, not sure if everyone did it at the same time or if there's an "every five year" rule to re-prove you still live there. If the owner moved out, I'm sure they can keep claiming the exemption until the city figures it out - if they're smart about it.

We had to show proof that we had vehicles registered to the property we have the homestead act with. Registration requires proof of address which links everything.

The taxes on my home actually went down last year. I am not rich but I pay my mortgage and taxes easily without having to lie or cheat the system. If you want to own property as way of a money making, you have to pay higher property taxes. That’s just how things work.

The homestead exemption was just increased in PVD. Even though my house value went way up, my taxes actually decreased this year.
