Rock climbing gyms! There is a Rock Spot in PVD that is bouldering only, a Rock Spot in Lincoln, or a Central Rock in Warwick that are all fantastic and full of youthful folk

I think the providence location is much more conducive to making friends. The Lincoln location seems to be very slow in my experience, and a higher proportion of the people going are parents with kids.

I adore Rock Spot in Wakefield, but have not bumped into anyone too friendly while climbing. It’s too bad, I’d love more climbing friends

I recommend looking at what Meetups are out there. Hiking, paddling, walking, etc. - I’ve met good friends in those.

I recently went to Central Rock in Warwick on a Friday night, it was hopping with a lot of young folk that were eager to chat. It also helped that it's dog-friendly so I could bring mine along and trick more people to coming over and talking to me =)

FieryVegetables t1_iyqn7op wrote

Oh, how fun! I didn’t know they allowed dogs, but I love it. People have encouraged me to go there, partly because they are much more generous with their ratings, so they feel like better climbers :) it may help if they still don’t have autobelays… that probably makes people more sociable.

Low-Medical t1_iys17r9 wrote

I climb at that Rockspot! That gym is essentially the URI rock gym ( with the exception of an older crowd that shows up on weekends), so I think it can be tough to meet people there if you're not college-aged (I'm not). And on that note, I'm always looking for partners! I get sick of climbing all the autobelays. And I don't know if you do outdoor, but I'm always psyched to meet folks who want to go do sport, trad, and ice.

2

FieryVegetables t1_iys44yl wrote

I think you’re right. The people there are generally half my age and not particularly warm. Staff is usually good, though.

I try to go weekday mornings to avoid people hanging out waiting for me to finish figuring out a problem, haha. But more belay partners would be great.

Oh cool! I've rappelled on rock, but have not climbed a whole lot. I’ve never done ice, but it looks fun.

I'm moving to Providence in 2 months (living in Newport currently), what I've done in my area is join as many social clubs I can find.

Since you're into fitness I would checkout group fitness classes, intramural sports, dance classes, etc.

There's a running club in Providence called Gansett Run something... I forget exactly, it's on Facebook.

Also there are more than a few social groups on Meetup.com

It's still a bit difficult making friends that way imo. I found most people to be reserved so I had to be more forward than I am used to and ask them to hang out.

Good luck! Try to be patient and have fun with it, you'll make it.

401 Run! We run at Gansett Brewery every Wednesday night at 6! It's a blast. This time of year brings some lights, some bright clothes, and come hang! No need to drink after. They also run in Wayland on Thurs nights, and Garden City in Cranston on Tues I think

I was 33, had drifted away forn friends from form my adolescents. Had know idea if I'd ever meet new people. Started frequenting a coffee house, and found a whole new social circle. Of course cafes are known for drama and clickey, but least not alcohol drama. I 49m am always looking for new people to add to my social circle. There is always interesting conversations to have. I find myself at the Coffee Exchange and Plant City at night Good luck!

We have a list of amazing restaurants! And I have a list of places that have a wall of calendars and fliers that have so much going on!

If you want them let me know and I can message you directly. There’s so much going on right now between markets, art shows, concerts, talks etc.

Girl I understand completely, I was also completely disappointed with Providence after moving here. But I am starting to like it now after 3 years, despite the fact I haven’t made a single friend!

To be honest, I just like it because I’m comfortable here now. But honestly the food sucks, the people aren’t very friendly or intellectual, the construction everywhere is unsightly, practically no interesting events ever happen here. Just typing this out is making me realize I should probably think about moving lol!

I’m 31F and in a similar boat of trying to just get out there but now that it’s winter it’s extra difficult to get out there. Still need to join a gym though so maybe that will help.

I swim too! Well I haven’t joined one here yet but back in Ohio I swam regularly. If you don’t mind my asking which gym/pool did you choose? I’ve been looking. DM if you’d rather not put it out for the world to see if you’d rather.

Also I’m sorry about the weather! I can’t imagine being used to a 70 winter and then dealing with this.

If you're interested in stimulating conversion, I 49m and a buddy hang at Plant City coffee house in the evening. We don't talk about sports, video games, or topics of popular culture, mostly intellectual and the philosophical. Good luck!

Super Fun Activities Club! Casual IM sports all over the city. We play soccer in Pawtucket with friends from my wife’s work, but we’ve made some more friends who had just joined up as well! There are games downtown, in Warwick, Pawtucket and maybe some other spots too. They play different sports year round, so see if anything catches your eye, and fits your schedule.
