AAPI population Providence 6% but honestly since many are scholars connected to Brown RIC PC URI, they might not be voters. I don't think anything nefarious going on here. I am Asian American.

Yeah, something could be the most diverse group so far, be incredibly representative of the larger population, yet still not include every single possible demographic. That doesn't make it not diverse.

Given the history of society and politics, the description "diverse" just means "not just a bunch of white men."

Take out the PI, never in my 30 plus years have I ever seen Pacific Islanders over here except the guys who played football for college or the NE Patriots.

I don't think anything nefarious either but I do think there is something going on with voter demographics. Some groups get the blind eye turned on immigration while others don't even get that opportunity.

In general, it is 100% true statement to say that the U.S. needs a lot more foreign immigration than we currently have and it definitely should not be focused on white european countries, like the last administration wanted.

It was laughable when Former Guy said he wanted people to migrate from Norway. What Norwegian in their right mind would give up socialized healthcare, college, retirement, long term care, childbirth benefits, etc?

I suppose if you’re Norwegian, but you hate other Norwegian people, food, and culture and just want to go to a Guy Fieri Branded restaurant every day, it’d make sense? That’s a very small niche tho

It could be immigration from anywhere to be honest but let the numbers get closer and don't favor one group for another. Keep it equal across the board.

These are elected positions. How are you personally helping people from these backgrounds run for office and win?

participating in the process for one , donating to whichever candidate aligns with my views however none this past election. Hence why I say throw someone in there for face value. There was an Asian girl who ran for city council in November I forget her name, why not put her on a special seat in the name of diversity hire.

How precisely do you think democracy works?

So it can’t be diverse unless it has every race?

So is affirmative action but that's still legal right?

daymanahhhahhhhhh t1_j2sux3l wrote

What does that have to do with this post and your complaint?

leavingthecold OP t1_j2syd37 wrote

well isn't affirmative action race based, why wouldn't it apply to city council then.

daymanahhhahhhhhh t1_j2t4mu8 wrote

Umm these people are voted in…. So how are any of them affirmative action hires?

9

leavingthecold OP t1_j2t73jd wrote

Why can't we just apply the same affirmative action to get a Asian, Native American, and any under represented " minority " in there. Don't we all want DIVERSITY

−5

daymanahhhahhhhhh t1_j2t7977 wrote

Because they get voted in.

leavingthecold OP t1_j2ts7n4 wrote

Well next time the city council run comes up the city should do a better job with getting under represented people in there exclude them from the voting process. just like a guaranteed shoe in

I’m curious who the more diverse folks you helped run for office and donated to in the last election were. And if you didn’t help out a campaign, why are you complaining now?

Ward 14 Shelley Peterson was born in Peru and something like 90% of people from Peru have at least some mixed indigenous ancestry.

Wow now she looks like a Native person however she checks off Hispanic. Trying to see if we ever had a native person from any type of tribe here no Elizabeth Warren's of course.

It is like the term “people of color”, “diversity” just means not all white.

They’re both pretty useless terms and seem to be used for expedience.
