I see nothing wrong with trying to strike up a conversation with a stranger, asking if I can buy them a coffee or sit with them. They can always say no. Who cares if I come across as creepy to one person? To another they may like the company or be looking for someone themselves.

If they're looking for someone themselves, why aren't you just sitting there so they can approach you?
