Wow. I'm surprised this could happen being surrounded by so many people. I guess whatever it was blocking his air was big enough to where it couldn't come back out. Scary and sad.

It is. It depends on if he was eating in an area that is supervised. To teach in VA, your supposed to have proof of CPR training. Some trainings (the one our school nurse certified me with) include the Heimlich maneuver.

What a horrible way to die. I know what it's like when you're choking on something and can't get control of the situation - it's absolutely terrifying. šŸ˜”

My daughter goes there. I know that sometimes horriblle things just happen, but I'm struggling to understand how, with a building full of trained people, so close to a hospital, could the kid have gone for more than half an hour without oxygen. I hope that we get some more info on the timeline.

Not trying to be insensitive, but thatā€™s a big kid. Itā€™s possible that whoever was attempting to perform the Heimlich maneuver on him could not perform the abdominal thrusts effectively enough to clear the airway.

This is so sad. I canā€™t even imagine. They should put those DeChoker devices in schools.

Used and used correctly are entirely different things

How current are the people in the school on CPR? I lifeguarded for years. If you donā€™t practice you forget and many people just go through the motions when learning.

ā€œWhen emergencies happen you rise to the level of your training not the occasionā€ or whatever

It was used correctly. Confirmed by the doctor at the hospital. First responders did all they could. Donā€™t be so quick to blame someone for not helping enough, when they were trying to save a life and nothing could be done.

I mean I didnā€™t but Iā€™m sure your self-righteousness makes you feel good

I should also add that nothing in the enws reporting says anything about the doctors "confirming" the heimlich was done correctly all that has been reported is that the resource officer rendered aid - where did you get this information?

Can you at least let the class know where you're getting the information that the doctor confirmed the heimlich was done correctly? I'm genuinely curious.

I wonder how a clinician would be able to tell if it was done correctly or not after the fact...
