Isn't that a thing for food delivery apps? "Secret restaurant menu's" hiding under a larger brand?

Its almost like a ghost kitchen thing. Right now theres two on Uber Eats, one called The Meltdown and the other The Burger Den, that's located at the Dennys at Broad and Dickens. This is in addition to Dennys being on there.

78

panopticon31 t1_j8r9z9j wrote

Because you're 1000% more likely to order a burger from "the burger den" then Denny's.

Fuck, I don't know what it is, but my mouth is watering right now just reading the name "The Burger Den."

Still won't try it tho cause I know what Denny's burgers taste like. Of all the burgers I've had, they're definitely burgers.

This guy burgers.

Honestly. Its been a few years but Dennys burgers were pretty kickass. Huge fucking greasy giant hamburgers. Cooked really well and actually tasted like meat instead of char.

I hate the ghost kitchens. It’s misleading to the consumer. But I figured this was more just to get away from bad press, but maybe they’re trying to just make what they offer more obvious? Idk

Mikey6304 t1_j8t9tky wrote

Some of them are separate businesses that are renting kitchen space, but most are just rebrands or alternative takeout menus. Wild Burger is Buffalo Wild Wings, It's Just Wings is Chili's.

My coworker has been telling me about these strange restaurants that have popped up in delivery apps that all share the same address. He's mentioned a Maggiano's To Go that he claims is unaffiliated with the actual Maggiano's but I haven't looked into it.

PayneTrainSG t1_j8rkya1 wrote

I believe they're owned by the same company that owns Chili's, so there you go.

Yep. I've seen them, O'Charleys, and Hooters to name a few have these setups. I think O'Charley's was like Chucks Burgers or something. Hooters first did Hootie's Burger Bar, and now they're doing some Hot Dog thing. chicken tender thing called Chase Elliott Chicken Tenders

Pasqually's. They're an option locally still.

A handful of ghost kitchens run out of S&S food marts from North and Southside, and Red Robin and TGI Fridays have ones too for sure

PrologueBook t1_j8t9lzw wrote

I moved out to Brooklyn from RVA in 2021. Ghost kitchens make food apps and even Google maps a nightmare.

Bodegas will register with generic names and stock images. You have to cross reference, and go to street view to verify everything.

TheMightyBoofBoof t1_j8sq4tj wrote

Red Robin operates like three of them in addition to their normal restaurant.

piggyperson2013 t1_j8tjqv1 wrote

As others have said, it’s called a “ghost kitchen”. My partner worked at TGIFs at one point and they had a sushi ghost kitchen inside of it with a completely different name and graphic design

You could also say that Longoven now has a ghost kitchen because they opened Lost Letter within it but I also don’t quite consider that a ghost kitchen because they’re super up front about it and not trying to dupe anyone. Genuinely seems like two restaurants in one now.

2

Farmerjoerva t1_j8rkn81 wrote

Well when you’re know to be a sexual predator and treat you’re employees like shit, rebranding makes sense

Can someone explain how these ghost kitchens are monitored by the health department? Nothing comes up for this place when I search for it.

https://inspections.myhealthdepartment.com/va-richmond/search?searchStr=vegan

There is one for Sugar Shack/Luther Burger though.

I also checked the State Corporation Commission for an entity by this name, nothing. I know restaurants often have a LLC owner different than the name on the front though so that's no surprise.

26

xZOMBIETAGx OP t1_j8ry80u wrote

I don’t know. I think they’re very unethical. But I think this is more of trying to avoid the name Sugar Shack if I had to guess.

14

The8thHammer t1_j8t0b93 wrote

They aren't using a separate kitchen, it's literally just sugar shack with a different profile online. They don't need another health inspection.

GingeeBreadKnight t1_j8tldsi wrote

I wonder if this had anything to do with their poorly done Valentine’s Day (lack of) donuts. Tuesday my partner went to pick up an order he placed weeks earlier as a treat and there was a single woman working when he arrived and she was freaking out over grub hub and uber orders because they had NO donuts made and she was attempting to fill those incoming orders over the one we had placed in advance. Maybe they took their name off to stop more orders going to them? Lame. He wanted to surprise me since we had them as VCU students but they’ve fallen so far it’s so sad.

People should really just stop using delivery apps which encourage this kind of shady behavior. Call the restaurant and place an order for pickup. More of your money goes to the restaurant and you don’t allow these “ghost kitchens” to flourish.

I'm gonna ask you a very dumb question, but I have an allergy that kind of works this way so does "cooked" or "baked" dairy have a lesser effect on you than like straight milk?

1

xZOMBIETAGx OP t1_j93wjiu wrote

That sounds more like it might be an intolerance tbh. Allergies and intolerances are two different things as I understand it. I’m not an expert or doctor, but I can’t have even a small hint of dairy in anything or it’ll have brutal effects on me.

JoonSquad_ t1_j93xjjk wrote

Mine is an allergy, though not an anaphylactic one. It's OAS, a subset of hay fever, and it causes my mouth and throat to itch after eating raw fruits and vegetables. Some stuff, like bananas and avocados, even makes my throat swell. However, if the food is cooked or processed, I can eat it just fine. Wasn't sure if that was a thing with any other allergies though.
