This was primarily due to luck. I use an older Nikon D3300 with the 55-200mm lens it came with. He was just super close to the trail and wasn't moving when I was taking shots.

Perched pics aren't that hard to get - challenge is mostly getting on their level.

Bird-in-flight is more difficult, but autofocus took a huge leap forward with the newer mirrorless bodies.

Love these little guys. I’ve got a healthy population of them out in Varina and see them multiple times a day. It’s very fun to watch a murder of crows go fly after and harass one, hawks scream like little bitches when they run.
