I noticed how dangerous the line of sight is with the fence blocking. If you are driving in the inside lane you can barely see farther than a cars length ahead of you. Almost hit a stalled car.

It's still there, just inside the fence! Saw it on my walk the other day
Oh, beautiful! I'll have to go pay my respects.
That brings my joy every time I pass by.
Over 2 years and it’s way past time for the city to figure out the landscape plan and get rid of the fencing. I wish they would have it down by Easter for the parade
Might get hate for this but all the former monument areas are a huge eyesore. They should at least put some plants/trees in there place. Better yet kept the pedestals and put different Richmond art on top.
That was my thinking as well. Even without the pedestals I think local art / sculpture would be awesome. Rotate them out every couple of years
A nice idea but it was ridiculously expensive to remove the monuments.
Right but they weren't planned on being rotated. This idea wouldn't involve giant permanent pedestals and statues.
Fair enough
The Stuart monument near me was replaced by a tree
Yeah tree that is 3ft tall…. The city put absolutely no effort to make the landscaping appealing. Feels like we’re going backwards sometimes. (Also ruined a really cool skate spot but I’ll let that one go)
The lights for the monument are also still there, which is just super lazy.
Maury also has some short trees in there.
Big trees are expensive I guess?
Who would hate you for this. Dr. Evil?
I think they should put a stage there. It could be a park with small concerts.
The fence went up the morning of 1/25/21.
I think our new governor is deliberately letting it stay up out of pettiness.
Richmond City is doing Richmond City things by dragging their feet for years.
Didn’t Northam give/sell it to the city as one of the last things he did before leaving office?
I’ll have to check. I thought it was still state property. If it is now city property, that fence will remain for years to come.
Edit.
> There are now plans to remove the fence since the land is now owned by Richmond instead of the state, according to James Nolan, press secretary for Mayor Levar Stoney.
Article over a year old, fence over 2 years old. We’re all going to die with the fence still up.

It is controlled by the City. Not the State. The State gave control to the city a couple of years ago. So it’s Stoney’s decision.
Didn’t they do it late in 2020? It’s been at least 2 years at this point.
Yeah, it’s a safety hazard. Which means the city already knows and has decided not to take action. Gotta kill someone first then they would take action unfortunately. Doubt a fender bender would do it.
Jan 2021. Here was the official announcement: https://dgs.virginia.gov/globalassets/business-units/do/documents/newsroom/dgs-to-install-fence-around-lee-monument-to-prepare-site-for-statue-removal.pdf
> The Department of General Services today will install fencing around the Lee Monument grounds to ensure the safety of visitors and workers as part of DGS’s plan to prepare the site for the removal of the Lee statue. As we await the resolution of legal challenges that have delayed the statue’s removal, DGS wants to be prepared to act quickly upon a final determination. The fencing is not intended to be permanent.
So ya it's there so they can act quickly to take down the statue...
July/August 2020; it wasn’t up 6-5-2020 or 6-6-2020 when everyone got tear gassed
The former Davis monument drives my crazy. They could’ve at least thinned it to be the same width as the normal median so you wouldn’t have to drive around the edges when going straight through on Monument.
The city planning commission eventually approved a planting and landscaping design for the circle. It was approved in late fall so they should be starting to plant soon.

Guerilla gardening time?
OP must have just got out of their coma of 3 years
Would be nice if it was ready in time for Monument on Parade on Easter. No chance of that I bet
That fence will probably be up until we take it down
They are going to spend $120k on temporary landscaping that everyone is supposed to admire from afar (not actually use the public property). The planning commission made the recommendation to city council back in the fall and it was approved. Not sure when it will start, maybe after they are done cutting down all of the trees on the street?
