Try a farmer's market if you have the time for trial and error -- this time of year some of the orchards will come here with apples and cider.

Next Saturday at St. Stephen’s on Grove, come by Drumheller’s Orchard. Fresh, non-pasteurized apple cider (among other things)

Little House Green Grocery probably has Rinker's cider half gallons in stock by this time of year.

Agriberry is at basically all of the local farmers markets and usually has fresh cider this time of year. So good.

I've got a killer crockpot recipe I happen to be making today and it's just devine (especially when you add bourbon to the mugs right before serving if that's your jam)

Homemade apple cider:

Need:

Crockpot or large stock pot

Cutting board + knife and/or apple slicer

4-6 red apples (I prefer honey crisp but fuji work great too)

1-2 granny Smith apples

1 medium to large naval orange

Spices (I go by taste but here are rough measurements and can be adjusted to your pallet)

3-6 Cinnamon sticks

2-4 star anise

1tsp -1/2 tbsp allspice

10-20 whole cloves

1-2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 cup brown sugar (or white sugar w 1 tbsp molasses if you don't have brown sugar)

Core and cut up all your apples (skin removal optional) and slice up your orange (leave the rind on) chuck em and all your spices in the crockpot or stockpot on the stove. Fill with enough water to cover the fruit, give it a good stir. 4-6 hours on high or 10-12 hours low for the crockpot. For a stove top stock pot bring it up to barely a boil then put to low, barely medium heat for 4-6 hours. Add the brown sugar about halfway through for either method.

Your house will smell amazing. I reccomend making some Cinnamon rolls or pumpkin bread/muffins too with it.

Also, making your own is pretty simple. Check out some YouTube vids and then head up to Original Gravity. All you need is a jug to ferment it, some store bought juice and some yeast. Let it sit and then bottle it. The guys at OG are super helpful and will set you up for a fun little project.

Takes all of 10 min to prep! Just give it a random stir every once in a while while it's cooking. It'll last up to a week in the fridge and you can just reheat it on the stove or you can freeze it for the future!

The Dorey Park farmers market is pretty close, possibly closer than the Carytown farmers market. The Lakeside farmers market is a good one too, and it's only a couple more minutes away.
