Oooohhh what a solid suggest that I will definitely be hitting on the way home today. Thx <3
oh HELL yeah
always down for a new ethiopian place
You've convinced me. Going there tomorrow night
Woohoo! but be sure to check their hours- I think they may close kinda early since theyre a cafe
Do they make their injera bread with injera only?
Like teff flour only? Tbh I'm not sure. But it tasted like they used niter kibbeh on the outside but the regular injera probably doesnt have it.
Yeah I ask because the Nile is the only place that uses all teff flour, I have celiac disease so it’s nice that I can eat there safely,
Someone else recommended Kitchen 33 in a previous edition of this thread so I gave it a shot for breakfast and was very pleased. Real mom and pop feel. $5 flat, tax included, for a brisket, egg, and cheese sandwich on a round roll. Might be a bit of a drive for some but boy is it worth a try!
Kitchen 33 reminds me of Moore St. Cafe. It's delicious, inexpensive, and consistent - just with a bit more southern flair.
Tried Akida for the first time and was very impressed. Something about the slightly shabby exterior and interior had me a little nervous, but the fish was very fresh tasting and I think reasonably priced for very good sushi. Very quick and polite staff, too.
Also tried Chewy's bagels. They make a very good breakfast sandwich (better than Nate's, I think), but I think Nate's still has the best bagel over all.
Seconding Akida, I meant to post this last time we had this thread but I had some of the most incredible tuna I've ever had in my life in their Robinson Roll. I was nervous about the eel but it was good, too - but like two weeks later I'm still thinking about that spicy tuna.
Akida has my favorite sushi in RVA. I used to go a couple of times a month when I lived on Monument. They have a budget-friendly dine in dinner special that includes an appetizer, a regular roll, and a specialty roll all for ~16.99. I can't say enough about the quality and freshness of their fish either.
Brenner Pass last night. Still amazing, as always. Had oysters to start then the swordfish. It had delicata squash and these amazing super thin crispy oranges. Like they were dehydrated, but so thin there was no chew, just crispy concentrated orange goodness. And a pistachio sauce which was divine. They remain my favorite restaurant in Richmond.
Edited to add: also went to Conejo TWICE. Their ceviches and las costras are killer. It is super loud inside, so I probably wouldn't go with more than one person, no way you can hear across the table. But the food totally makes it worth it.
I went to Brenner Pass on my birthday. The swordfish was delicious. My only complaint was the restaurant was loud.
Beauvine continues to slap
Hot Pot 757 had possibly the worst meal I’ve ever had in Richmond. We were given no instruction. No extra tongs to handle cooked meats. Our grill barely came to a sizzle. We had chicken on it for 30+ minutes that remained inedible. The meat was truly foul. We gave up after 40+ minutes of trying. Avoid at all costs.
Counterpoint - I had a bangin meal there that absolutely ruled. Everyone else I was with thought it was amazing, too. Looking around the restaurant, everyone seemed really happy.
What kind of instruction did you need? You order stuff and grill it til it’s done or cook it in your hot pot. You increase or decrease the heat for either with the buttons by the burners.
If you needed instructions, wanted more tongs, or couldn’t figure out the burner - why not just ask the staff for help instead of leaving and writing a shitty review?
Hot Pot 757 is delicious, yall. If you have the cooking skills of an eight year old you’ll be just fine. I had never been to a legit hot pot place before, but I didn’t require any “instruction.”
We did ask the staff constantly for more tongs, for instruction and how it all worked and we just got a shrug from the crew there. Don’t be an ass and assume I didn’t do any of those things while there. I’ve spent a lifetime in hospitality and I’m not leaving a bad review for shits and gigs.
I’ve gotten the impression from reviews on here and the RVA good bad and ugly Facebook page that the people that own that place subscribe heartily more to the Asian point of view of customer service, which comes off as rude and abrupt to us westerners.
Fair enough - I appreciate you clarifying and sorry for being snarky.
Sorry you had a bad time there, our meal was great but I guess it can be a mixed bag.
Such a shame. My partner and I live right down the road and we were so excited to try it out.
Really enjoyed Arianna Kabob in Carytown. I had been meaning to try since it opened, what with Afghan being my favorite cuisine, and it didn't disappoint. Only had* the chicken platter, so there's plenty more to try.
You have to try their lamb shank the next time you go. The seasoning is on point, and the meat is so tender that you could slide it off the bone with a single shake.
My doctor's not gonna be happy with me if I keep eating like this.
Finally made it to Smokey Mug for BBQ. Brisket, sausage, mac-n-cheese, and collard greens.
I’m an ex-Texan and it was the best BBQ I’ve had in Richmond so far (note: I have yet to try ZZQ). Also staff were beyond friendly. I know they are newer so I really hope they can make it.
I moved out to Short Pump and am trying the places near me. So far, Vinny's Pizza is solid for pizza. Chun Hing wasn't great. I am not sure the next restaurants we will try but I'm sure the list will grow.
Anokha is one of my favorites out there.
Thai Won On. Really great Thai, and they have a second British menu with supposedly the best fish and chips in town. Run by a husband and wife, wife is Thai and husband is an old British guy.
I love them! Been going to them since their food truck days!
When I worked out there I enjoyed Boychik's for a quick breakfast or lunch. Bonus, it reminds me now of Red Oaks.
Love the food but god their coffee is just awful
Peter Chang’s and Cheng Du.
Solid spots in and around Short Pump --
Peter Chang's (best Chinese food in RVA - esp. if you appreciate spicy food)
Canastas (incredibly flavorful Peruvian chicken with massive portions)
Taquiero Habanero (no frills hole-in-the-wall with the best tacos in the West End)
La Vita E'Bella (tasty, inexpensive Italian with massive portions)
Sandano's (best subs in the West End + beach fries!)
Boychiks (tasty, inexpensive, no frills Jewish diner)
El Cap (tasty, inexpensive Tex Mex with massive portions, cheap margs, and tasty white sauce)
Niveneh (delicious, authentic Iraqi food with killer kebabs, falafel, & baked goods)
Mantu Market (high quality, delicious, & authentic Afghan food with great produce, baked goods, etc.)
E-Loteria (flavorful, delicious Mexican street food with killer quesabirria tacos, elote, & churro sundaes)
You left off Cupertino's off Cox Rd - on the other side from Boychiks. They make darn decent bagels.
Will always second Boychicks. Been going since I was a baby and it never lets me down
Pho 1 makes a solid bahn mi
3 Marias for RVA’s best Tex-Mex (next door to Cheng Du).
My favorite Mexican in the west end/short pump area is Ay Mama.

Went to Tarrant's west because their restaurant week menu looked a little better. Pretty good experience but also completely dead on a Monday. Portions were kinda small though and our server was kinda slow 90 minutes for dinner and we ordered within 5 minutes of sitting down...
Currently sitting at Kuba Kuba's bar having a Kubanaso and a Falcon Smash for lunch. Really solid sandwich. Really solid staff. Great place for lunch.
Who's got good quesadillas around here?
I've got some family visiting from Europe and they want to try different foods and one of them is quesadillas. So, I'd like to take them someplace that has good quesadillas. What are your recommendations?
Y Tu Mama at the Veil southside has great quesadillas.
I kind of feel like Y TU Mama is the closest thing to a "greasy spoon" that a taco place can be. It's good...but there is oil. Lots of oil.
The best quesadillas use Chihuahua cheese. Big Chile makes excellent quesadillas.
El Pope
There is a newly opened quesadilla restaurant in Lakeside next to Final Gravity. I don't think they have a webpage yet.
Killa Dillas. Eye roll.
Edit: Eye roll directed at the stupid name, not the OP.
My cats name is Dilla (short for quesadilla)… I think he might have a new nickname coming his way 🤣
Thank you!
Whoa! I was not aware of that and I live three blocks away from Final Gravity. DO you know what it's called? I'll have to stop by tomorrow during my morning walk.
Like Moose said, it's called Killa Dillas. I have a picture of the menu. They just opened this week so they are definitely still figuring things out. https://imgur.com/a/r5lIpFO
The quesadillas we had were delicious. I would skip the pico and chips though as it was pretty bland. If you like things spicy, ask them to add jalapenos.
Excellent! Thank you!
I've only had a quesadilla from there once but Don't Look Back Triple has fat quesadillas. Honestly better than their tacos I thought.
Taste of India off Midlothian. Buffet Style on the weekends and it was better than we had expected. Mango lassi was very good and it would be worth coming to just for the naan. Definitely on my repeat list.
Not gonna lie, the hot honey fried chicken sandwich at Capital Ale House is pretty damn good.
I ended up eating there randomly and was pleasantly surprised at how good that sandwich was.
Had Wong’s Tacos out in the west end for lunch and it was great. Liked it so much I went back for more tacos the next day! Need to try Wong Gonzalez downtown now.
Do not get your hopes up for Wong Gonzalez.
Despite being almost the same name and concept they are very different.
Wongs Tacos is much better than Wong Gonzalez.
Has wong Gonzalez gone downhill? I haven’t gone in 3 years.
I might be going there soon enough for restaurant week.
any recs for restaurant week? 👀

Had dinner with my SO at The Mantu last night around 6. First time there. Place was empty. We asked for water and were given warm bottles of water from Kroger.
Started with the Chapli Kebob, which was supposed to be garnished with 'shredded potatoes'. It was french fries. The tofu patties were good though. Covered in undercooked vegetables and french fries didn't reflect the $15 price though.
We split the Vegan Mantu and Kachaloo E Dashi. The mantu was not bad, but the vegetables were undercooked and the kidney beans weren't the best. The Kachaloo was supposed to be 'organic potatoes' but they reminded us of canned potatoes. Also garnished with undercooked vegetables.
For most of our meal our server was having a speaker-phone conversation directly behind us.
Wouldn't recommend. Not worth the $50 we spent.
No other diners the whole time we were there.
I had Pizza Bones in Church Hill for the first time a few weeks ago - and man what a little gem that place is!! Very simple menu, along with a handful of specials. And once their specials sell out, they're out for the night. We ordered two vegan and two regular pies for a group of friends to split, and had to basically shoo away the non-vegan friends from eating all the vegan pizza!
Hands down the best vegan pizza I've had to date. I have no idea if they make their vegan cheese and vegan pepperoni in-house, but forever I'll be a regular for as long as they're in business. They apparently get some of their flour freshly milled from a bakery across the street from them, and I think they also have rotating local wines?
Anyone know if any of the Restaurant Week restaurants are offering it to go? I’ve called a few and they were all dine in only.
Ah shit... didn't realize I was this week, I've been out on a supplier visit 🥲
Checked out Hook and Reel on Forest Hill, where the OCharleys used to be. Pretty good meal, and they apparently have all you can eat options but I didn't mess with that. Crab roll was good.
Husband and I have been twice, haven't had a bad meal or experience there yet!
Have you tried the all you can eat? It looked pricey but I know some folks that could down some blue crab.
Has anyone tried Jew Fro? Menu looks good!
It was a letdown for me personally, my wife and I thought the food lacked flavor and the portions are very small.
I remember ordering some harissa carrots from there as my side, opened it up and there were 4 little baby carrots.
My wife just tried a bakery called Buttermilk in Petersburg, and she was nice enough to get me a doughnut and a cupcake. She absolutely loved her gluten free cupcakes. The cupcakes that were designed to taste good, however, were not. To me, it tasted like a cupcake from a gas station. The doughnut was a yeast recipe, and was in fact the kitties titties.

Okay, so it wasn't in Richmond, but if you guys have ever heard of Burger King it's a great spot. I got the Ghost Pepper Whopper at their Gainesville location. I'm pretty sure Richmond has a location too. It was amazing, an actually spicy food item from a restaurant. Usually these products are advertised as spicy, but hardly have any heat to them. I'm looking at you Chick-Fil-A. Hard pass on Gainesville, but I got to advise you all to go try it for yourselves.

A new Ethiopian restaurant called Buna Kurs just opened up next to Sugar and Salt in Jackson Ward. It's supeerrr good. The barista grinds her own spices for chai and makes her own concentrate. That with some steamed oat milk is perfect for a crisp fall morning. But don't get me started on the amazing food! 7 dollars and I got ketegna and the best chickpea salad I ever had! SUPER great portion sizes! Best priced lunch in RVA tbh. They are a cafe so I'm sure they have great coffee as well!
