Good Morning all. Let me just say that it's been probably a good 8-9 months since my last uber/lyft. But omfg, prices are out of control . I get there's surge pricing in effect but 60-80 dollars not including tip to get a 10-15 min ride is highway robbery.

If you think that's robbery, what portion of that do you think the driver receives?

Took my son to the zombie walk yesterday and I think he enjoyed it. Took both kids to the maymont light thing last night and although the kids liked it, to me it just felt like waiting in a long line in the cold.

Anyone else check out the Mozart festival in church hill yesterday? It was wonderful! Drinking a beer outside of St. John’s and listening to a string ensemble was peak Fall experience

It sounds like you had your hands full watching the kids and you did not get to enjoy looking at the lights themselves - I'm sorry for that and I hope you get a break soon.

I loved it; I often look back at photos from last year just to remind myself that it was real and not some fever dream, but I also don't mind the cold and have no one to look after.

I took 2 littles age 5 and 9 and we had a great time..they energetically but safely threw glow balls, drummed on the colored boxes, did the s’mores and in general enjoyed I’ve been without them and liked getting there later and just wandering.. different experiences for sure!

I suppose groaning is appropriate for the halloween season.

One time I want to the only decent young people bar near Harrisburg, PA. Whole strip closed down at 2a PROMPT. So few ride share services for the small population. $250 bucks to go 10 miles. Two hundred fifty. We were drunk enough to convince ourselves we could walk the 10 miles, but after about 6 miles we ubered the last 4 at a reasonable price. The surge prices are bananas

Today we are going to carve pumpkins.

Went fishing yesterday as planned and even caught a fish. It was a good day. Going to costco and TJs and getting ready for the week. Not as much fun as fishing.

Maybe because of Halloween and ppl drink so more ride share demand and less available cars. I use Lyft and Uber a lot and it’s about 10$-13$ to go 2-3 miles away before tip

Yesterday I woke up, entered Bold Rick into my GPS and ended up stumbling upon a harvest fest at Carter Mountain. Fiance and i bought an pickin back, threw on some Animal Crossing music and got some fresh fuji apples straight from the tree.

Today I play in a concert for the first time in years and get to see my mom.

What’s wild is how much the prices can differ between Uber & Lyft at the same time. 7-mile ride home from a party at 12:15 last night and our options were a $53 Lyft vs $14 Uber. I kept watching the Lyft prices after calling the Uber out of curiosity, dropped down to $27 for 3-4 minutes around 12:25 but shot back up into the $50s by the time the Uber arrived.

My normally ultra lazy house dog gets to be a barn dog today. We’ve been here almost 2 hours and he’s losing his absolute shit. We took a LOOOONG walk in the pastures and he’s still wired. Where is he getting this energy??? I’m doing this in preparation for him to meet a potential new dog brother this afternoon. He’s always way too energetic when meeting new dogs and makes them mad so I’m trying to get him all pooped out before his play date. Wish us luck!

We went last year. It was kind of fun but way too crowded, felt like being shuffled in a cattle line past some nice lights that you couldn't fully appreciate.

Then again we did go on a very busy weekend night - I heard it was nicer on weekdays.

I have a cold, probably some crud that Boaty picked up at preschool. She's had it for almost two weeks but she's happy, it must not be bothering her. It's giving me a sore throat and a lot of congestion. I miss breathing freely.

Do you soak your squirrel in a brine or anything before you freeze it? I understand they can be quite chewy.

It's a nice walk. Nothing amazing, very pretty. They rotate the route every year or so to a diff part of the park. Great for "stay up late" exciting evening for young kids or good for a small date.

I'm more of a fan of InLight, which seems to me to have more artistic and creative value than the "pretty lights in the forest" events like Lewis Ginter's et al.

I will say, last year it was at the Japanese Garden - quite a hike for elderly and handicapped not expecting the steep up and downhill hike.

The year prior it was around the Mansion and was a very easy, level walk.

Caution - only use it at night. Twice daily if you HAVE to.

It can be addicting to your nasal skin cells. If you use it too much and then stop, you get rebound congestion and have to live like that for a while before it returns to normal. I can breathe through my mouth all day but I'd rather die than breathe through my mouth and try to sleep.

We did Portland over Labor Day weekend for a wedding on one of the islands. NEIPA Mecca. It was so great. And the food was amazing. Eat out anywhere?

I worked at Maymont for a time this year, doing their best to ensure accessibility for their light show was important, I feel they really try. Accessibility in the park in general is a constant struggle for them.

I think a lot of visitors really don't grasp how big and hilly the property is, they bring the young and old who just can't enjoy the place to its full extent. It's nobody's fault really, people should just consider a visit to Maymont on par with a light to moderate hike.

I gather they used to have trolleys or trains or carriages or whatever and they went out of style or demand fell or something. In my visits over the last 15 years, I've never seen an in-park transport method like that, save for special events. I think a recent article said they had transport driver positions that were ended during the pandemic and weren't rehired.

Nursing a hangover from a Halloween party last night. Doing some yardwork- it’s a beautiful day!

Dealing with the approximately forty billion acorns that have dropped into my backyard over the last few weeks…. It would be super impressive if they weren’t such a pain in the ass to try and get out of the grass.

This was the first year since 2019 but they do normally have the festival every year. I’m not sure if it will be in church hill again or in another neighborhood. I hope it’s in church hill again though!

We just moved in to our new apartment (no signs of any bugs when we moved in) and saw a very lazy but monster palmetto bug last night. Pretty sure we brought it with us from Florida, although I've read that you guys get them up here as well.

Palmetto bugs aren't too terrible, they generally try to get outside. It's the nasty brown German roaches that are the really bad ones.

I don't brine it before I freeze it. Just shoot, clean, and into a vacuum bag. It's probably 15 minutes between sitting on a branch and in my freezer.

I do brine it before I cook it, though. Basically I just soak it overnight in very salty water. I don't think that makes it much softer, however. The big thing I have found that helps tenderize the meat is to cook them in a pressure cooker. The meat falls off the bone after that so you can just pull it off and use it like shredded turkey. Squirrel tacos have been my best idea so far outside of Brunswick stew.
