Mind dropping a location? For gay crime reasons

Sillloc OP t1_iy6e8id wrote

Carytown over a little Italian place. Probably not their billboard, don't gay crime them

twelvesteprevenge t1_iy6jxp6 wrote

Nah, but it would be worthwhile tracking down whoever does own that billboard space and giving them the business. And by business I mean vigorous public shaming and withholding of money. And maybe some gay crimes.

do you know which Italian restaurant hes talking about?

8

bruxalle t1_iy813hm wrote

I’m guessing Mary Angela’s, that’s the only Italian restaurant in carytown with a billboard on the roof as far as I know.

23

DeezEyez t1_iy9bu1n wrote

It is Mary Angela’s. Saw the sign there today.

5

NotFerrari519 t1_iybzro3 wrote

They probably put it there on purpose because it’s right near Babe’s 🙄

8

WheresMyDinner t1_iyd1be1 wrote

Wonder how many people saw the sign and thought “y’know maybe I shouldn’t go to Babe’s today. I’ll just spend the night home alone with my bible”

4

urfavgalpal t1_iy9ctxa wrote

Do you know who it’s sponsored by or do you have the exact content? There’s a billboard on boulevard by Movieland that’s like a pride flag and tells LGBTQ+ people to go to a specific website and that website is like “only god can judge so you shouldn’t like hate crime gay people because we all sin but also being gay is a sin and shouldn’t engage in that lifestyle”. I’m wondering if it’s by the same people

3

Sillloc OP t1_iy9df7p wrote

Think it's the same. Seed sowers or something

2

allowatt t1_iy6eq3z wrote

There is a big one on Arthur Ashe near the diamond as well, luring people to their anti-lgbtq website under the guise of some vague message regarding lgbtq rights. It’s really upsetting tbh

skatarina t1_iy74b7v wrote

Noticed it a few days ago. How much do you reckon it costs to rent it out for a good few months so we can put a giant picture of literally anything else up there like the Lowe’s cat or maybe a hammerhead shark

47

DefaultSubsAreTerrib t1_iy7rzxh wrote

A big bold "BE GAY DO CRIME" billboard would go nicely there.

60

TripawdCorgi t1_iy82q2s wrote

I would donate some of my queer dollars to make that happen.

28

DefaultSubsAreTerrib t1_iy8csac wrote

Call the billboard company, get a quote, start a gofundme. I'll contribute but I'm way too lazy to organize

22

TripawdCorgi t1_iy8sjtq wrote

Normally I would be down to organize, but at least for the immediate future I've got too many things on my plate stressing me the eff out right now and I have to recognize when I'm at capacity, but will happily toss some money at a GoFundMe if someone here does this.

NannyW00t t1_iy99mwc wrote

Lamar is the main billboard company, and according to their website a ‘Poster’ sized billboard (like the location in Carytown), would range from $300 to $2500. Prices depend on location, length of campaign, and number of ad locations purchased. So, budget for the $2500 range.

Edit: a word

11

skatarina t1_iy9cptr wrote

What about the one on Arthur Ashe? I drive by that one a good amount. I think the user who suggested BE GAY DO CRIME has a solid idea

Yeah the real message is hidden under pages of bible verses and their interpretations setting it up to throw out the anti gay stance

19

DeannaZone t1_iy8qjen wrote

It disgusts me when they misuse the bible for such a thing as this ... if they truly believed the bible they would remember the only 2 things we are asked to do in the New Testament ... love God and love others. So much anger and hate ... it kills me ... I had to learn and accept myself so I could remember what it was like when i was not loved and to love those around me truly as God loves them. I rather serve and love the lgbtq community, then shun them. I serve God, if He loves them, then I love them, whether that is with emotions, or by physical support such as clothes food or service needs.

The entire history of organized Christianity has been using excerpts from the bible to justify a given behavior, from colonization and the displacement of natives, to wars, to slavery. Millions of people at the time found a way to justify their behavior by pointing to their holy books and claiming a divine mandate. This kind of mental gymnastic is nothing new

4

DeannaZone t1_iybdt10 wrote

I agree with you, and when I tell that to other christians I am known as the "fake one" all I do is shrug and move on, just like Paul did in Acts.

Sometimes I forget Richmond is the South too, mainly bc I’ve lived in SC which definitely feels more culturally Southern than Richmond. Richmond is very unique in that it seems to be a mixture of a lot of places. Every now and then, something does remind me, that yes, this still is the South. 🤷🏻‍♀️

23

djeeetyet t1_iy818r6 wrote

As a Philly transplant I try to make it as “Sunny”down here as well, which is fitting since Philly is now the capitol of “where bad things happen” for the segment you’re referring to.

5

chasetwisters t1_iya8d2m wrote

This isn't a southern thing. I just drove through Indiana and these kinds of billboards are everywhere, along with tons of anti-abortion billboards

5

acldesmo t1_iyac08w wrote

True! I’m from the Midwest originally and there is plenty of stuff like that there! 🤷🏻‍♀️ But Richmond definitely seems less Southern than it was in SC. And I mean, in regards to the food and the way people talk and such!

elPrimeraPison t1_iy7hsf1 wrote

the South isn't geographically its cultural. EX Tennessee is southern but parts of VA arnt

I agree with your first sentence. Not sure why you added the second sentence, which unexpectedly seems to confirm the geographic nature of the south.

I saw the one in carytown and thought it was vague enough it could have been pro-gay? It was like “what does Jesus really say about being gay in the Bible” and considering the only passage in the New Testament that could be construed as Jesus having an opinion on queerness is in Luke 7 verse 1-10 when he heals an enemy soldiers gay lover. So like he was pretty supportive of gay people if you ask me…

20

MutunusTutunus t1_iy88tdr wrote

If you click through to the website on the billboard, it's standard Christianity death cult bullshit. From their section "LGBTQ":

>Many leaders of the gay community don't just want equal rights - they want to eliminate all opposition to their lifestyle from society - just "as it was in the days of Lot.' Like Jesus said above.

From "Evolution":

>If you are a Christian who believes Jesus and the Bible are accurate regarding creation, don’t be surprised if you are mocked. Remember, Jesus was mocked - and Jesus is really the one being mocked when they mock you.

14

ripleyajm t1_iy896av wrote

Yeah that sucks a lot. I obviously didn’t go to the link on the billboard, I just drove passed it and thought “hm well having read the book it seems like Jesus is pretty loving and supportive of all humans regardless of orientation, so this billboard failed”

What translation says that the centurion's servant was gay? I've never heard this before

0

ripleyajm t1_iy81yio wrote

translations of both Matthew and Luke use the greek term pais where you typically see servant in modern translations. Pais in greek was often used to refer to a younger gay lover in greek and roman cultures.

Here is a pretty solid article about the translation

https://qspirit.net/gay-centurion/

Jesus didn’t hate shit man. That’s kind of the whole point of the book. And the idea that being gay is a sin comes from the same chapter of the Old Testament where it says you shouldn’t get tattoos or eat shrimp. Leviticus is full of absolute nonsense rules.

If you’re going to call yourself a Christian you need to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, and Jesus didn’t teach you to judge anyone’s way of life

18

dovetc t1_iy8ept7 wrote

Kind of silly to assert that Jesus doesn't hate sin:

>And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. Mark 7, 20-23

An acquaintance of mine had an anti-gay billboard go up in her town in NY state. She found out who owned the billboard and wrote them a letter informing them what was posted on the billboard. I guess they don’t review it before approving it?! Seems crazy.. but anyway, she wrote a letter (and maybe had friends/family write letters of support too, I’m not sure) and they actually took the billboard down and allowed her to post something supporting lgbtq+ for free.
