Honestly on a lower end budget and flat pack you really can't get better than ikea. They also ship to a fed ex location for very cheap now.

Class and trash. They have a Scott's addition location and an Ashland location. You can get am idea for what they have by looking at their Facebook and Instagram pages. The stuff is used, but high quality.

The Dump sales people don’t really hound you, for what it’s worth. They’ll say hi and ask if you need help when you get in, but they don’t stick around.

I just got a bar cabinet on sale from Target - usually costs $280, but was on sale for $60. Ordered it last Tuesday, got to me yesterday. They have a lot more online than they do in any store around here, and the bar cabinet at least is decent (not amazing) quality.

I've gotten other furniture from Ashley, if you go dressed like a bum the sales people will ignore you until you approach them to let them know what you want. I did get pitched on a protection plan but all you have to do is say no thanks.

Craigslist and rent a truck from Home Depot or Lowes. People sell practically new furniture for cheap just to get rid of it pretty often. Truck rental will prob cost you $50-100 or so by the time you tack on mileage and fuel.

Never paid more than a couple hundred for a single piece of furniture doing it that way.

Maybe try the new HomeSense in Short Pump (like HomeGoods but they have more bigger pieces of furniture). Not sure if they offer any sort of delivery service though.

I agree, you can get decent looking stuff from IKEA if you avoid the cheapest options, and adding nicer knobs is an easy way to upgrade the look of a dresser or nightstand.

With Ikea it depends on the finishing materials. Some of the finishes they use damage easily, so you have to read up on that for items you buy.

Yeah, it’s way above that Walmart level.

Not exactly what you're asking, but don't forget about antique/salvage stores. The quality is often better with older furniture and can be reasonably priced. You can usually find something cool that you wouldn't have necessarily thought about on your own, too. Just an idea.

IKEA really is the way to go. I've got exactly the same pieces you're looking for in my house and it's all held up for close to ten years now. The dresser at least has survived two moves and the other stuff, one.

Don't buy anything used or from a rental company. Bed bugs are rampant in Richmond. Despite their name, bed bugs hang out in any and all types of furniture, whether upholstered or unupholstered. Never, ever buy a used bed.

Check out the Richmond Habitat ReStore! Purchases go to help Habitat for Humanity and there can be some good deals on furniture. Everything is donated, but quality is usually pretty good. Some things are even new. Fair warning though, prices range from amazing deals to overpriced. I would throw it in your thrift store rotation if you’re shopping around.

I've had this same situation in my life. I don't want to buy flatpack but getting furniture home is hard. I've done these things:

• Hardware Truck - You can rent a flatbed truck from a lowes or Home Depot for like $20/hour. It doesn't have ratchet straps or anything, and it's first come/first serve so they are limited. Easier in the winter tho.

• U-Haul - in town rentals for a truck are like $20 + mileage but they have a reservation system. You know what you're getting but it's a bit more expensive.

• Paid Help. There used to be a reddit guywithatruck or ihaveatruck or something that was happy to help for a VERY reasonable fee.

• Store Delivery - restrict your shopping to stores with delivery. It's not easy or cheap.

Home Restore can be a good place and believe they do deliver furniture. The southside store is definitely higher priced higher-end stuff than downtown, but both change over pretty fast too, so there's reason to look again.

I'm going in a different direction here and suggest going back to Hanes, rooms to go, Haverty, whatever. You now know the landscape and how the stores operate. Stay firm with the staff regarding whether you want help right then or not. Ask questions, take as much time as you want, be confident, and don't feel like you need to be pressured to do anything.

Anxious uncertainty and indecision are chum in the water for any sales person. Get comfortable in their presence and don't allow yourself to get pushed around and you'll do fine.

Online furniture sales have really exploded, and if you're discerning, there is some decent stuff. I recently purchased bedside tables and a dresser from the same set that were sold by different vendors, I think Cymax and Home Depot of all places. Hardwood and veneer over MDF construction. Even staining and good hardware. About the same price as the aforementioned chain stores during a sale.

Online auctions have some fabulous fine furniture available for next to nothing. I have gotten some great items at Cannon's Auctions in Richmond. There are many other local online auction places to check online. Most have a link to a company that delivers at the top of the listings. If not that, call the auction house and ask if they can recommend a delivery service.
