I'm currently tumbling along the tracks in a very warm Amtrak quiet car on the way to DC for the weekend. Feeling very cozy indeed.

That's next week for us. We're binge watching some documentary on Egypt with my Father, and occasional overs of women's T20 cricket which I find soothing in ways baseball isn't (to me), and I don't know why yet.

Was in a pretty melancholy mood earlier but I've got a fire going and booze for heat. Currently trying to keep a cat hellbent on destroying ribbon and wrapping paper away from the gifts.

Definitely regretting not picking up something for dinner but there's stuff in the fridge that today was the eat/freeze deadline for so I'll have to cook something here soon.

Edit: Cat tax. The void is the destructive one, the other is just trying to chill by the fire. https://imgur.com/a/vrDwEXh

They’re adorable. I’m a huge sucker for tabbies. Mine would do the same and sometimes I’d just wrap the paper around them and tape it like they were a present. Not tightly, and they’d then run around and leave me alone for a few minutes. Rinse and repeat. Wasted paper. Totally worth it, especially if your cats have a sense of humor.

Edited typo.

BurkeyTurger t1_j1fyhfb wrote

Thanks. I'm definitely a sucker for tabbies too. I finally placated the other one with some paper cuttings but I'll have to try wrapping her up next time, that sounds hilarious and she definitely has an attitude.

Turned on the baseboard heater in the kitchen for the first time.... ever, but only because most of the water lines in the house are in the crawlspace under there. Was debating about chancing it, but the electric bill for a few days of extra heating is far cheaper than potential plumbers bill should anything happen.

Now that my power is back, I'm cozy under my electric blanket, having a battle of the wills with my dog who would also like to be cozy under my electric blanket. Little does he know, I couldn't care less if he gets on the couch or not, and as soon as he lays down and stops trying to sneak his way up or leverage me off with his nose (so he can take my spot), I'll gladly invite him up. Sadly, the temper tantrum seems far from over.

(He is warm enough, he's cozy in his sweater.)

Currently 1° in PA (“feels like” of -17°) and haven’t left my sister’s house all day for obvious reasons. Keep checking the cam I have on my cat back at home in Richmond - can’t wait to be home in a few days to just relax with him. (Heat is on and he’s in my top floor apartment so I know it’s toasty there for him). Started my book of the month pick for December this afternoon so hoping to make some headway on that tonight. Family is watching a movie and I have too short of an attention span so I’m in the guest room opting out with a glass of wine.

She gets the “regular” which is pork meatballs plus noodles and the rest of it

My husband and I are holding off on getting together in case unless we're fairly confident it's not Covid. I didn't wanna make a new thread so I'll ask here and hope somebody replies...

How worried should I be about my pipes bursting? I'm a new home owner and I have to be out of the house over the holidays. I left my kitchen sink on drip, turned off the two spigots in the backyard but I don't have an accessible valve for the one in the front yard. I put insulation covers on all 3 before I left.

Edit forgot to mention my thermo is on ECO mode and it looks like it's keeping the house at 55F right now

3

systematical t1_j1gdpgf wrote

I'm worried. I read that leaving a faucet dripping can help reduce the chance since it keeps the water moving through the pipes. I left my kitchen sink slow dripping and my upstairs bathroom slow dripping.

I also decided to do a load in the dishwasher even though it wasn't quite full yet. I am hoping this helps and will prob take a shower before bed for good measure.

3

Valyrian_Steelers t1_j1jjt04 wrote

I was too worried and came back to check on the pipes. Everything looked good and I Googled how to turn off the water to my house so I don't have to worry anymore haha. I'm lucky the previous owners left their water key! Although they left it in the most strange place ever - the attic! You'd think it'd be in the garage!

1

guiltyofnothing t1_j1hhmsu wrote

Late to the party here, but if your pipes are in a crawl space — and that crawl space’s vents are covered and it’s properly insulated — you should be fine.

We kept the taps with any exterior-facing pipes on drip overnight for good measure but any well-insulated crawl space is gonna stay above freezing.

2

Valyrian_Steelers t1_j1jjjvv wrote

2

guiltyofnothing t1_j1jkyhl wrote

Ayyy. Just gird yourself for some weird sounds from your pipes when you turn it back on.

2

Charlesinrichmond t1_j1io7rl wrote

if you can adjust it, this isn't a good time/temp to keep your house on 55, because of thermoclines. I would only do that if your insulation is excellent and your are sure your pipes are not in the outside walls.

The power bill for a couple of days is nothing compared to the literally unlimited amounts of damage possible.

And always turn off your house main water supply when you go out of town in the winter. Summer too, but especially winter

1

Valyrian_Steelers t1_j1jjzbm wrote

Lesson learned!

I turned off a house's water for the first time just now :). With the help of youtube haha. Proud to say the water is off and now I can go back and enjoy my Friendsmas.

My heat pump couldn't keep up with the cold so now it's always running and keeping house 50 to 55 last night.
