Only Happy When It Rains

I love these questions because invariably I’m googling “What Happed to…”

Edit: Shirley Manson just said in an interview “I took a crap on a cheating boyfriend’s breakfast cereal. I’m not ashamed; I’m rather proud of it.” Respect.

That's a power move. But was in the box, or did she jump up onto the table and pop a squat over his bowl?

GrayRVA t1_j0bq1rx wrote

I don’t know about Shirley, but the last time I did something similar, I just squatted and held the paper bag open.

Why someone would want music to dilute the sound of falling rain is beyond me. That said Satie's Gymnopédies are good.

manyamile t1_j0bvw58 wrote

❤️ - one of my favorite sounds in the entire world. When I was little, I used to sit on my grandparent’s back porch in the rain because I loved the sound of it plinking their tin roof.

SnarkMatter t1_j0d66m1 wrote

OMG, love that piece. Satie is one of my favorite contemporary composers.

Contemporary? Homeboy died 100 years ago.

SnarkMatter t1_j0dd092 wrote

Contemporary in the classical subgenre sense. Anyone 20th century and up is deemed to be Modern/Contemporary classical music.

I went to school for classical music and took a buncha classes that focused on 20th century composers for music theory and musicology. I know waaaay too much about this shit.

6

Stitchmond t1_j0dq3q0 wrote

That don't make a lick of sense to me. Especially considering his work crossed the turn of the century and that the Gymnopedies were composed in the 1800s. Seems foolish to label a style of music by year created. Can you give examples of other composers and works labeled "Contemporary?" Simply googling "contemporary classical composers" gives me 40 some musicians of varying schools and styles, most of whom are still alive today; the list does not include Erik Satie.

I also like adding stuff to The Weekend Event Thread! Check it out a little later for all the good stuff going on this weekend.

Kathy’s Song by Simon & Garfunkel

The first verse is “I hear the drizzle of the rain, like a memory it fall, soft and warm continuing, tapping on my roof and walls”. The other verses are just a as good, if not better. Poetry set to a great fingerpicking guitar part.

something about that watery wurlitzer (or a rhodes?), the plodding drums, and dreary harmonies just embody a rainy day for me. follow-up might be “flowers never bend with the rainfall” by simon and garfunkel.

edit: ooo, or "i think it's going to rain today" by randy newman. such a good fucking song. the guy hates it apparently - thinks it's too maudlin - but it's so fucking good.
