Can anyone recommend a place to go for mole removal? I have no idea who I’m supposed to go to. A regular doctor? A dermatologist? Do I need a referral? I do have insurance but I don’t have a PCP. I live in the Glen Allen area so I’m looking for someone relatively close. Thank you!

Guy who has to get 2-3 moles off per year here. Usually you do a dermatologist but I recommend a plastic surgeon if the mole is on your face. They usually do a bit better on ensuring the scarring/visual impacts are minimal.

Call Christine Rausch Dermatology, 804-282-4940. They're off Gaskins right off of 64. My wife works there. They have a dermatology PA, a surgeon and a plastic surgeon. They accept most insurances and no, for mole you don't need a referral. Consults are free.

Dermatologist. https://forefrontdermatology.com/location/glen-allen-va-23059/ I like the folks at Forefront Dermatology in their GA office. Your insurance will determine if you need a referral, but Forefront can check that for you when you make an appointment.

Dermatologist if it's somewhere on your body that you don't mind a scar. Plastic surgeon if you want it done as close to perfection as possible.

I didn’t even realize there’s a difference. I will definitely be looking for a plastic surgeon to reduce scarring. Thank you so much for your input

No problem at all! In general, plastic surgery is only known to most for cosmetics; there's an entire world of things they do on top of that!

The other individual who suggested a Moh's procedure isn't a bad idea either. Might be worth a call or asking whoever you go to for their opinion. Place a lot of emphasis on the fact that you want as minimal scarring as possible!

A Mohs surgeon would be ideal.

I googled what a Mohs surgeon is and it looks like a cancer-specific thing. As far as I know I don’t have cancerous moles (although you never know! 😬), but thank you for the rec!!

I had a benign cyst removed by a mohs surgeon. If you need to minimize scars they are good for that too

My dermatologist did a biopsy of a mole on my stomach thay they were concerned about. It came back pre-cancerous, so they referred me to a plastic surgeon to get it completely removed. They referred me to the Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery.

Before I got to the word dermatologist and this clicked in my mind , I was wondering why a doctor would be removing a mole (I was thinking the garden animal variety). Thank you for giving me a laugh and I hope you found a good Dr ☺️
