Both of my parents have cancer so my doctor has been running labs to make sure that I am not at risk as well.

Did you know that you can have a good diet, exercise, healthyish lifestyle in general and still just have really bad genes? My heart sank when I read all of the deficiencies/disorders they have apparently diagnosed me with. Not a great way to end the year.

Hope you're all having a better day than I am.

Also - starting off the new year with change in your pocket. Never start a new year on empty.

Where are you getting your labs done? My dad passed of a VERY rare cancer (primary peritoneal) and my mom was just diagnosed with cancer but we’re waiting to see how bad when they get the results back. I’ve tested negative for BRCA genes but I’d love to get more info!

donniedarkhair t1_j294kes wrote

The first set was from Primary Health Group and the second was from Virginia Women's Center. VWC ran the ultra-sensitive labs through LabCorp. Hope you test negative for all the bad things!

jeb_hoge t1_j29694z wrote

Yep. Knew that. I've got a family member who's lived a life full of healthy eating and daily exercise, etc., and still has a form of colitis that's basically made it uncomfortable to travel and enjoy food.

ChuckBS t1_j29lj2d wrote

Yup, I was diagnosed with cancer at 30 for no reason but “sometimes it just happens” I’m sorry your folks are going through that. I hope your labs turn out well.

Thank you. I'm so sorry that you have cancer so young. I hope you go into full remission here in 2023.

Thanks, I’m 36 now, and in remission as of this year.

Our family tradition is pretty simple. My 12 yo spends the night with my ILs, has every year since he was an infant (except last year, when I had covid and we didn't want to risk spreading it). This is the first year without my FIL, who passed about 2 months ago now, so it was extra important to MIL that they uphold the tradition. Husband and I will stay at home, watch the ball drop on YouTube, and be in bed by 12:05. Welcome to your 40s, I guess.

I have a lot of women’s clothes to donate - any recommendations on the best place to take it? Some fast fashion, but mostly brands like Loft/Express and quite a few dresses, professional, and business casual pieces.

You might check with a women's shelter for assistance with interview clothes?

I would suggest the clothes rack. They resell (at great prices) and the Junior League supports a lot of good causes.

Road trip to Roanoke and looking for a ~1 hour podcast episode. No politics. Lay it on me.

Edit: THANK YOU! The family carpool is blown away by the options. Especially the Tom Hanks of Trees.

Completely Arbortrary - a podcast about trees! Each episode they do a deep dive into one specific tree species, as well as one other tree-themed topic that is related to that episode’s tree. It’s great!

Hope you like it! I’ve become obsessed with trees since moving to RVA a couple years ago, and listening to the podcast has been super fun.

Word of warning though: the hosts are located in Portland, OR, and therefore have a bit of a west coast bias. For example, they admit that they generally like conifers more than hardwood trees - which is pretty clearly a wrong opinion if you ask me. They also get some facts wrong every once in a while when it comes to some of our local trees. But they’re generally very interesting and entertaining!

Grizlatron t1_j28yzwy wrote

I too have strong opinions about slightly irrational things and I respect your bias towards hardwoods.

Wait, are you me? I stumbled across a chestnut tree soon after moving here and it absolutely lit up something in my brain!

No traditions, usually in bed long before midnight like it is any other day.

As a kid, my parents would cook a specific meal and we would put photos from that year into albums.

Work has put me in view of a lot of holiday decorations. Seeing some of them start to come down is bittersweet. I have some good memories and some bad memories of the holiday season but I always enjoyed seeing everyone’s festive spirit even if I couldn’t fully feel what they did.

I’ll miss them but of course would we really appreciate it if we saw it all year round?

My family typically upholds the pork and sauerkraut tradition for new years (honestly we’re grasping at straws with German heritage as I’m mostly Irish).

Figuring out new years plans - I think I’d prefer something low key as I’m not feeling festive this year.

Our annual tradition usually consists of my husband and me falling asleep before midnight, and our daughter taking over my social media accounts poking fun at us being asleep and her being bored. This year she’s thrilled to have plans, so husband and I are drawing straws to see who stays awake past midnight to drive her home.
