Transplant from Austin, grew up in Chicago burbs. For #2:

RVA, in my opinion, is very similar to Milwaukee. There are traits that remind me of older Austin, but it's not really anything like present day Austin. The culture, people, architecture, industries, climate...none of it line up.

MKE is this totally overlooked city with great character, diversity, small skyline, and a scruffy vibe to it. MKE is trending up, just like RVA, but isn't in a warp speed boom like some other smaller cities. If I had to pick another city, albeit a much smaller feeling, it would be Knoxville for the same reasons as above.

Man, Milwaukee and Madison both sound so dope but I just can't with their weather. Nor Chicago for that matter πŸ˜†

100%. That's why I left! Spending 4-6 months in agony waiting for some warmth is tough.

Hahaha I feel so vindicated. I would love to live in like NOLA or Savannah from October to April and then Ann Arbor or MKE May-Sept. Guess I need an RV.

You'd be pretty surprised how hot and humid the Midwest can be

they really get the short end of the stick weather wise.

I've heard good things about KC aside from that though. And doesn't KC have a better climated than Chicago/Madison?

Eh, the summers in Chicago are probably a bit nicer. Further north I think it really starts to get comfortable. August/September in KC can be awful, hot and or humid. It used to snow a lot more when I was a kid, now the winters are mostly like RVA just a tiny bit more cold and a bit more snow. It's a good town but I live in RVA for a reason πŸ˜†

I remember 1 year where something like 10,000 chicagoans died of heat in the summer. And I was like, my god, worst climate ever. Like 2 weeks of decent days

Austin texpat here too! Always said RVA feels like Austin in the 90s when I was growing up. Carytown especially like south congress back then. Don’t want RVA to be like Austin today though

SoCo is fast becoming The Domain, which is the Short Pump of Austin. Such a bad evolution. Carytown is inevitably at risk of the same fate.

Weather makes a huge difference though. It's one of the biggest things driving Richmond. And one of the biggest things holding back Madison etc

I've heard Madison is great. But I've never heard anyone say anything good about the weather there...

To be fair people get way too hungup on the winter. Everyone entirely ignores the most amazing summers ever. 70s, sunny, slightly breezy for like 2 straight months. Its summer nirvana. The humidity is null compared to the bullshit we deal with in RVA. In WI and MN you can actually spend all day, all summer long, outside and not be at risk of heat exhaustion. So much more to do when you aren't hiding from the sun like that level in Mario.

And winter is cold, yeah. We have heaters in buildings and cars for that. Its not like Richmonders spend a lot of time outside in winter. You only deal with the biting cold between the door of a building and door of your car. You have proper winter sports too if you dress right. Ice skating (also have indoor), snowshoe, cross country ski, ice fishing, snow mobile

I moved to Richmond from New England - I do spend time outside in winter, because we basically get no winter by ne lights
