Let’s hear it. I went to Buckheads the other day and it was great. But I’ve also had a sneaky good steak at Chez Foushee.

Sloppy steaks at Truffoni's. Big, rare cut of meat with water dumped all over it, water splashing around the table? Makes the night so much more fun. After the club, go to Truffoni's for sloppy steaks. They'd say, 'No sloppy steaks,' but they can't stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water!

I used to love the hanger steak at Edo’s. Haven’t had it in a long time though.

That new Brazilian Steakhouse at the Wigwam. RIO Brazil. Beats Texas de Brazil in my opinion

Used to work at Hondos its good, in the city Bookbinders, Tobacco Company, and The Jefferson are probabky the best bets

Wiltonator t1_j1nt113 wrote

Avoid tobacco company. Went there a few months ago and my hubby and I each ordered steak. The cut was tough and was over cooked, chewy and not much flavor. I’ve had a better steak at outback.

The filet at L’Opposum is the answer here.

Wild seeing Buckhead's is not listed. Anyone been to ML Steakhouse?

4

Usual_Frosting t1_j1ngjeo wrote

Went to ML a couple weeks ago. Despite the stellar Yelp reviews, it was…not good. No sears on the steaks, unevenly cooked, and the seasoning was just weird.

Disappointing because we really like Lillie Pearl and had high expectations. Maybe we just went on an off-night, but we won’t go back on our own dime after the experience we had. It was way too expensive to not have the basics of cooking a steak down.

Depends on what you're after. For a thick cut strip or porterhouse your best bets are Buckhead's or Bookbinder's. For a filet I'd say L'Oppossum. For a sous vide tenderloin it's Lemaire, no question.

GMUcovidta t1_j1v1yx4 wrote

Steak at Bookbinders and Lemaire are always super hit or miss.

Never been to the high-high end places listed here. Firebirds is about the most $$$ place I've gone to and never had a bad steak there.

AwsumMcCoolName t1_j1nsn9c wrote

If you want to splurge, Buckhead's and Bookbinder's are both great. If you want to splurge but spend less than you'd expect, try Lemaire at the Jefferson. They're all worth trying at least once.

I hate to do this... but I'm going to say some things. We eat at upscale steak & seafood places almost exclusively. Out of the local places that specialize in steak... Firebirds is reliable ONLY at the Belvidere location. Short Pump is not reliable AT ALL. They will get the order wrong and will get the temperature wrong. Buckheads: like being in an episode of Madmen. Decor stuck in the 1960s. You'll be surrounded by old guys who donate to conservative causes and get LOUD about it after downing a couple of single malts. Dank and dirty feeling. Hondos: okay, but the menu hasn't changed in 10+ years. I finally convinced them to stop playing Michael Buble, but I want to try a different side vegetable before I die. Outback, just because it was mentioned here: decent steak, terrible atmosphere. Best steak we've had recently was Ruth's Chris. And best service as well. I think this is also a politically conservative place so we avoided it for many years but the experience we had there (food and service) was fantastic. Wonderful charring and perfect temperature, wee seasoned. I should add, if you're on a budget, or are dining with kids, O'Charleys makes a good, well seasoned ribeye (at least in my local market), it's just thinner than more expensive restaurants. We never eat sirloin so I can't speak to sirloin and we generally eat at expensive places to avoid country music and loud kids.

Hondo's actually has changed their menu in the last year or so- no more prime rib special and a bunch of new apps

Ruth's Chris and Hondos are the only places in Richmond that have consistently good steak.

Bookbinders and Buckheads are both very hit or miss. I don't want to pay $60+ for a miss.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Flemings at Stony Point. Expensive to be sure, but the entire meal from the apps to the sides to the steak, including the dessert was phenomenal. Impeccable service too. We don't like stuffy ultra - formal restaurants and this was just the right balance of being very nice without making you feel uncomfortable.
