Had a digital subscription that was ~$50/year last year. Got a subscription renewal notice saying price was jumping to ~$130/year. Is this the normal price people are paying for a digital subscription?

Called to cancel and they bumped it down to ~$90/year then back to ~$50/year.

(Sorry, didn't see this was posted last week: https://www.reddit.com/r/rva/comments/zqtwxh/over_the_past_12_months_my_digital_rtd/)

Maybe they are trying to put themselves out of business. Like costanza trying to get fired.

Nah, they're counting on the people who don't look at their email and/or think they'll get around to cancelling later and then three years go by. Or are old.

I cancelled my digital subscription when it more than doubled. I have no concerns paying for a digital only subscription, I'd love to support local journalism, but I'm not paying more for RTD than three other subscriptions combined.

What does the RTD offer that you can't get from local TV websites, Reddit, and other online sources?

Years ago, when local papers were fully staffed, they were worth subscribing to. Now??.

There are some stories, especially about state and local politics. But not enough to justify the price.

My parents pay some ungodly price for the daily paper version now. A far cry from when I used to deliver it for like three bucks a week

Is that per month? My notice said it was going up to $27.99 a month

ETA I was paying $19.99 a month before this increase

Lol. Mine was 11 per month. They raised it to 27.99. I called to cancel and they brought it back to 11. Then a month later they raised it to 27.99 again. I called and cancelled and they offered the same thing. I'm not doing that every month.

Now I get ads for 3 per month.

I swear they are counting on most subscribers like my 75 yr old mother being on auto pay and not noticing the increase. I called her after the last thread on here and she cancelled. She has been complaining about how thin the paper has been for years anyway.

Mine was $52 for a year or a digital-only subscription.

they like to creep price up. They tried $10 a week on me and got me for a bit - needless to say I canceled and read it for free after that.

Even at free its arguably overpriced

Get news elsewhere, or if its something you really want to read from there climb a tall ladder, like one that's over 11 feet.

I called them and talked them into giving me $10.99 a month for digital subscription, because there was no way I was laying 27.99

This came up last week or so in a similar thread. The print subscriptions all doubled.

I must have missed. I'll search for it...

Looks like I didn't search "RTD" even though I used it in my post title 🤪

I knew the $50/yr was a promotional rate when I signed up for it.

The raise I got to $90... I kept it. My 2 requirements for RT-D is < $100/yr & rss support because their homepage is <50% local print non-sports news stories.
