My favorite quotes are from teachers: “Back in my day, we never had kids with x, y, or z.” Because we weren’t evaluating them for those things.

Studies from 2010.....Millions of children of color who did not have healthcare back then are now covered. No story here.

It is not from 2010. This study is from this year, 2023.

The study is comparing data from 2010 to data from 2020. The availability of health care and diagnosis is a confounding factor in the data.

So what, this is good news, isn't it?

if we assume that the base occurrence of autism remains unchanged in that time interval, yes, it's great news.

I wonder how much the stigma of the diagnosis played into this as well. I know mental health issues are often ignored and swept under the rug in these communities

Also, misbehaving black children are less likely to be marked for evaluation than white children in school. teachers assume they are misbehaving because they are badly behaved, whereas a misbehaving white student must have some problem going on.

But the reason is also that autism has been extremely expanded in its definition. Many previously separately listed mental, intellectual and social disabilities are now included in autism; even ADHD is now a form of autism.

ADHD is not a form of autism, while they're often co-morbid, they have separate and non-overlapping diagnostic criteria.

They are both forms of "neurodivergence," but not the same.
