Mounting evidence now suggests that the intestinal barrier is compromised not only in digestive disorders, but also in disorders of the central nervous system (CNS), such as Parkinson's disease, autism spectrum disorder, depression, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease.

Simple version: if you don’t feed your gut microbes they’ll start chewing on you to survive. Eat your soluble fiber and resistant starches.

Yes it makes you fart for the first week. It goes away as your microbes adapt to a preferred food source.

Source of info: I used to have leaky gut syndrome.

Main symptoms: anxiety, depression, constipation alternating with diarrhea.

Fiber supplements currently in use: unmodified potato starch (cheap), inulin fiber derived from chicory (flavourless, non thickening, disappears into my morning tea without a trace) and xylitol sweetener which gut microbes gobble up like soluble fiber (yes xylitol is toxic to dogs as someone always points out whenever that word comes up).

xylitol significantly raises your blood glucose, though - I've heard keto dieters advise against taking it

this demonstrates yet again the importance of what you do and don’t put in your gut.

I have PPMS (primary progressive multiple sclerosis). I also have been diagnosed with malabsorption in my gut that’s caused pernicious anemia (B12 deficiency). I am also taking very high D3. All of fat soluble vitamins are deficient in my blood due to the malabsorption. When I miss my B12 injection I have mental fog so bad my wife has my POA. I do take fiber chewable 4 a day. Life is hard for me and I am disabled by all of this.
