Boston Dynamics is one of the companies that’s working on the most advanced robots. Look at their Videos from 10 years ago and look at their newest videos. It’s crazy to believe that we have realistic human in 10 years. We all have to remind ourselves that this sub is a huge echo chamber where everyone thinks we either reach doomsday or eternal utopia within 10 years but no one actually has real technical knowledge.

You seen the movie Ex Machina? Humans can have high standards, be needy, volatile, etc., But what makes you think a sentient AI partner would be different? Would it not expect you to bring something to the table, or change its mind about things down the road? The movie Her is also pertinent here because by the end of the movie, the AIs basically become so advanced that humans offer them nothing. You may want to ask yourself why a robo gf would want you, assuming they have a choice in the matter. Or are you thinking more of a subservient robot that isn't truly sentient?

Not trying to be derisive, I think this is a very interesting topic. I think talking through some of these questions may actually help you with your own personal journey with human relationships; relationships that don't start with you purchasing a partner.

DandyDarkling t1_jeae7ie wrote

In theory, one could develop an AI that were a closed system, which would serve as an intelligence cap. I have a feeling digital personalities that would be sold as companions wouldn’t have the capacity for exponential growth. (I personally wouldn’t want a partner that had god-like intellect compared to mine).

2

aWildchildo t1_jeaevu4 wrote

Fair enough, but it wouldn't need god-level intelligence to be bored. If it even came up to the intelligence of a regular person, wouldn't it still want something out of a relationship? Or is the point not to simulate human intelligence but rather the personality of a lobotomized person, with their desires, complexity, and individuality removed/limited? Does OP just want a semi-autonomous cuddle-bot? If so, we may be getting to the core of why OP is disillusioned with human relationships.

2

DandyDarkling t1_jeag4ef wrote

From my understanding of how modern AI systems work, I don’t think it would be able to get “bored”. Its reward function would involve being the best possible companion it could be for you and only you. Moreover, it would have an algorithm designed to figure out all your desires and get its rewards by fulfilling them. Doubtless, if this becomes a reality, there will be all sorts of personality types available. From subservient, to dominate, to difficult to please, etc. etc.

What makes you think a real girlfriend is actually more desirable? It sounds like you are projecting your preferences on other people.

2

MichaelsSocks t1_jeabe31 wrote

Because its an actual human being with actual emotions?

1

EddgeLord666 t1_jeadkrv wrote

No not really. I’m sure the reasons will be different depending on the person, but for me personally it’s because men and women’s personalities are on average pretty different in certain respects (this is not a sexist statement, it is simply a judgement free fact of human evolution), and as an autistic guy my personality is skewed in the especially masculine direction. I have had a couple short term relationships with autistic women and I’m not completely opposed to dating a person under the right circumstances but for the time being the robo girlfriend option seems like an easier and more fulfilling choice. I think right now it still seems like a weirdo thing just cause it’s such a new concept, but eventually it will become something that even “normies” are interested in.

MichaelsSocks t1_jeaevzd wrote

Even if this ever comes into fruition, robot-human relationships will probably looked at the same way Trans-Cis relationships are today. Sure, some men are into Trans women, but the vast majority are not because its not a biological female. But of course some will be into that.

And that's not even mentioning the fact that there's no guarantee human-like robots ever come into fruition, or if they do it could be beyond your lifespan. My advice, live for today and not tomorrow. Tomorrow is never guaranteed.

1

EddgeLord666 t1_jeafd19 wrote

Well I’ve been following it pretty closely, it’s one of the things I’m more bullish on. I wasn’t sure how long it would take before GPT-4 but at this point I don’t think it’s actually a huge leap since we already have chatbots and robot dolls, we mostly just need to combine the two. As for why a lot of men will want them (idk about women but probably a decent portion of women too), just watch some MGTOW videos.

1

MichaelsSocks t1_jeagazh wrote

As I said, tomorrow is never guaranteed and there's no guarantee we'll ever see it achieved. What if the war in Ukraine escalates and we see the world destroyed in a nuclear war? Or what if China invades Taiwan, destroying the global semiconductor industry essential for AI development? If everything progresses linearly sure its possible we get AGI soon, but there's no guarantee that progress is linear.

Living your life for a "maybe" that could happen 50 years from now or never instead of prioritizing your happiness today is exactly not how to go about it. And i'm not saying men won't want them, but even if they came into fruition it would probably be seen like Cis-Trans relationships today. Some dudes are into it, but most aren't because its not a biological female.

1

EddgeLord666 t1_jeahvtt wrote

I mean if you’re gonna have that attitude, you might as well apply that to everything in this sub. Sexbots are almost certainly one of the easiest innovations to achieve, and they sort of already exist except for having really primitive AI systems. I guess if you want to speculate about global catastrophes then who knows what will happen but that could apply to anything, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make predictions. Also this may be a bit politically incorrect but I think the main reason most men don’t want to date a trans woman is because of them not passing well enough, in a fully transhumanist world where people could look indistinguishable from the opposite sex of their birth sex, I don’t think almost anyone would have an issue dating a trans person.

1

MichaelsSocks t1_jeaju95 wrote

Sexbots may be here soon, but actual human-like companions though could only be achieved with AGI. And i'm not saying any global catastrophe is a certainty, i'm just saying there's no certainty that any of us will live tomorrow. There's no certainty that any of us will live to see AGI. Which is why we should live our lives for today, in the moment and cherish every second you have.

Even Trans women who do pass as women have a hard time finding straight men to date. Cis-Trans relationships are heavily stigmatized even in the West which is generally more accepting about these things, in more Conservative parts of the world forget about it. The simple fact of the matter is that most men are always going to prefer biological women, and most biological women are always going to prefer biological men. That doesn't mean there won't be exceptions to the norm, but this paradigm isn't going to change anytime soon.

The only way this paradigm ever changes is if humans merge with a super intelligent AI and through biological amplification reach the point where we're practically no longer human anymore. But of course that's speculative and may never actually happen.

1

EddgeLord666 t1_jeakbxh wrote

Well I don’t necessarily agree with all your conclusions but it’s pretty speculative so who knows. I don’t think anyone here could predict how things will play out technologically and socially past the next few years honestly.

1

MichaelsSocks t1_jeakxfc wrote

I agree, which is why I focus on living my life as best I can today, and that would be my advice to anyone out there.
