I really hope this trial works out and we can eradicate blood diseases and have all the blood we could ever want/need.

Vampire jokes aside, this is a remarkable development and a necessary one. Blood shortages cost lives every year. Having something we can mass produce will save a lot of people. That's worth any number of vampire jokes.

In one manga series, a vampire says she doesn't need to bite people anymore, because she can order (lab-grown) blood from Amazon, which she stores in her fridge. He even freezes it and eats it like ice-cream. She stated that living in the past was very inconvenient and she disliked biting people. She's grateful for modern conveniences.

I hope this innovation will spread quickly, because it would be very helpful. There's a shortage of blood after all. I await a future when no one needs to donate blood.

Ok it’s good but wait seems that it’s only red blood cells that are being affected… IIRC (I’m not a scientist) there’s also the plasma which contains important… stuff. So we still need to harvest the blood!

The second sentence of the article sums it up nicely. “The bulk of blood transfusions will always rely on people regularly rolling up their sleeve to donate.” Thus was never intended to replace blood donations completely as it’s way more expensive, but intended only for rare blood types.
