Yeah the art looks horrible, try spending more time and someone might actually spend their time on consuming it.

Yeah it's bad. BUT it would be interesting to see how a child would perceive it. Wonder if anyone is working on a test for this. Give two groups the same story but one with AI illustrations and one with illustrations drawn by an artist....

Children would definitely notice and they would not like it. These characters are drawn weird as hell and creepy, sometimes missing legs or other body parts and having distorted proportions or they are conjoined with other objects.

If the story has legs, and author isn't self publishing, the publisher will be hiring an artist anyway. I
