but more than likely a 3rd option will become available and that eager startup will become a household name in the space rising above both

Big corporations don't adapt well to novelties. They can't handle what Clayton Christensen called "disrupting innovations" in his book The Innovator's Dilemma. Microsoft is already showing this in how they tried to enter the smart phones market and failed miserably.

Alphabet came into being one technology generation later than Microsoft, that's why they stand a slightly better chance to survive, but don't count too much on that.

The corporate giant who will dominate the AI world doesn't exist yet. There may be a guy or two working in a garage to create that giant, it's too early to tell.

Microsoft has always been a "Me Too" company being caught flatfooted on just about every technological advancement.

They stole everything from the original DOS operating system, to Excel, Word and Internet Explorer.

The only thing they have ever had going for them is the massive profits from basically getting a piece of the profit from 90 percent of the desktop computers sold in the world. I would give the edge to Alphabet not that Microsoft won't try to steal their innovations and reverse engineer them like they always do.

I strongly doubt that, they would have released it already and skyrocketed in value already. I suspect personally that OpenAI (Microsoft), Deepmind (Alphabet), and apparently even Meta (see their recent diplomacy playing AI) will all be competitive in the space.

DeepMind is owned Alphabet

The AI assistant chatbot or robot kind of tasks are done best by OpenAI and their models

The generative science and strategy is best done by models developed by DeepMind

But none of them have found a good way to properly evaluate the model response for truthfulness

So it's going to be interesting, I believe that in a year or so Twitter AI will be able to start properly addressing this issue

Alphabet is in the business of making money, pretty sure whatever Deepmind is working on is likely their cutting edge, if they had AGI I think we'd know.

Mind you in my opinion by definition AGI would have to be human level at robotics so it should be able to automate all labor including building and maintenance of said robots. The amount of value in that would be unfathomable to us.

They’ve made some fantastic moves in recent years. Their code editor is super popular with developers. Their typescript language has been adopted over JavaScript with a huge proportion of developers. They’ve made acquisitions of some really great tools over the past few years too. I wouldn’t count them out. I had the same opinion as you up until maybe 4 years ago.
