Disclosure, I’ve been a long time off/on lurker of this sub, and others like it. Generally I don’t like to voice my opinion of things on the internet, but this has been on my mind for a minute now.

Seemingly to me, there has been a change in the rhetoric and views of people in this sub on the concept of the singularity. What used to be “hell yeah the singularity is near!” has slowly morphed into “oh sh*t this might actually be happening”. I don’t know if it’s a more realist/pessimist view that is taking over, or perhaps there has been an influx of dissenting opinions from new users, but I feel like it is quite noticeable.

Does anyone else feel this way? Is there reason behind that? Was it all a larp until things got more tangible?

Edit: Appreciate all the good discussion, wish I could respond to everyone but it’s gotten away from me. I think the overall sentiment is that people are starting to realize the immediacy of exponential progress. Because of that, there is natural apprehension to that change, even from people who were advocates of the singularity.

Wild times to live in.
