With AI, life extension will be big.

What exactly were you looking in a sub called singularity? This is a reddit sub, you can follow social media from subject matter experts if you're looking for more formal/technical content

insectula t1_j6a94eq wrote

I'm not certain what discussions are being shouted down, but this is a good resource for all kinds of good tech so it's a must in my book. I have seen a somewhat liberal hive mindset, but since this is intellectual fodder that is to be expected. It's still one of my top resources every morning.

Go to r/Futurology, you'll love it there. It's where intelligent people such as yourself post.

Why thank you, it is in the name of the subreddit after all.

Go to subs like /r/Artificial, or /r/MachineLearning or /r/Longevity if you want more academic subs with less predictions. This sub is called Singularity for a reason.

Dumbass. Anyone who accuses the optimists of being the only side that's patronizing has clearly not read... pretty much everything posted by self-proclaimed cynics and skeptics, in every futurism community ever, for at the bare minimum the past 11-12 years. You seem like an idiot and I'm saddened that, rather than simply being left blissfully unaware that you exist, you had to post this single stupid-ass thread to preserve the memory of your moronic ass inside my brain.

Look at OP's bio and that tells you everything you need to know about them. OP, you are one of the most pretentious and insufferable persons I have ever seen in my life. I truly hope for your sake that you're just 14 or something, because if you're acting this way as a grown adult, then yikes.

7

alakeya t1_j6aokkc wrote

Have you ever considered that people may disagree with you because they have a different opinion? The world isn’t against you, OP, if you want to start a discussion you need to be ready for criticism as well.

I sometimes like looking at this subreddit with it showing actual legitimate advancements in stuff, but my god this place can often have a lot of detached, techno-bro, copium content in it. I guess it’s a sign of life not being pleasant for a lot of people right now.

I know you're being sarcastic but that subreddit is like 50% luddites. Every ai post has the same stupid comment "ai was supposed to take boring jobs, not creative" upvoted to the top. I don't know who promised them that. I suppose they watched movies like "I, Robot" and that's where their perception of creativity/intelligence being impossible for ai comes from. I read a comment there that ai will never be able to replace accountants. Accountants!!!!! There are a few sensible comments but the majority are just nonsense absurdity. They still have in their minds that humans are "special" in some way.

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6flzun wrote

I completely agree, I just was getting way too spiteful and frustrated for my own health, it was messing up my RL friendships.

This place can be like talking to a condescending brick wall sometimes, especially if you want to talk about philosophy instead of engineering.

1

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6fnnuk wrote

Philosophical discussions; there's a prevailing attitude that philosophy is just airey-fairey bull$hit, and only the rigid, mechanistic logic of engineering can be taken seriously.

As much as I appreciate this attitude for the incredible things that engineers do for humanity, I think there is more to 'intelligence' than simplistic determinism. But it's hard to articulate it without copping a whole lotta reactionary guff about how 'you clearly don't know what you're taking about', and 'you're making emotional arguments', and, my favourite, 'you're just anthropomorphising'.

I'm just frustrated and tired of it, not declaring a vendetta 🤣

2

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6fo6u5 wrote

Hahaha, wow, what a nice thing to say. I'm 32 as it happens, how old are you? Because making a huge fuss about how 'immature' somebody is; that's an extremely childish thing to do. You'd know that, if you were half as 'wise' as you clearly think that you are.

1

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6fp46a wrote

Except it's not embarrassing though. Yeah, I've had a bit of a 'meltdown' lately. But I get paid time off work and my GP gives me scripts for good meds to manage it, get good sleep and such, so a 'meltdown' isn't as scary as it might be in other circumstances.

This shit right here though? Hardly. Reddit is just a source of writing prompts for me, and the ones here make me too pissed-off and frustrated for my own health. Hence the angry OP.

Sorry if I 'wasted your time' 😅

1

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6fpmrm wrote

The sort of prolix, loquacious, verbose, needlessly sesquipedalian nonsense that I write, but without any reasoning behind it. 'Guff' is trying to substitute creativity and references for an actually-reasonable, intelligent argument. Engineers and business startup people do it all the time, it's their native language 🤣

2

DungeonsAndDradis t1_j6fy0be wrote

Yeah, I do the $49.99 monthly subscription. It lets me access up to 15 subreddits, and I can give out 150 upvotes, and 25 downvotes. I'm also allowed to post up to 10 submissions a month, and comment 100 times. This comment is costing me something like 7 cents. They don't really break it down by "each submission costs x" or "each upvote costs x". It's all rolled into the monthly fee.

2

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6gl75r wrote

Yeah, I tried putting up a thing about ChatGPT explaining its own operating processes, and getting it to reason about how its own language systems work, connecting the 'logic' of written language to the 'logic' of the DNA-to-protein pathway.

Clearly it went over people's heads a bit, but instead of asking about it, the whole post just got scrubbed for being 'low quality content', no other explanation offered.

This would have been a little galling on any subreddit, but considering sort of half-witted fearmongering that passes for discussion here sometimes, I was more than a little disappointed.

But c'est la vie, stupid is as stupid does. I'm not gonna pick a fight with the mods about it; it's trivial, annoying nuisance stuff.

2

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6gplun wrote

Oh really? Well whining that other people sound 'immature', and being offended by big words, makes you sound about 16, so I'd be careful throwing rocks in that glass house of yours, friend.

I know r/iamverysmart quite well, feel free to post me on there if you want. I'd love to see what it is you think I'm so deluded about.

alakeya t1_j6h2tio wrote

Well yes, that’s just how the internet is. I’ve been called stupid in this social more times than I can count just for asking questions. But if you ignore all the surface-level insults and you focus on the responses that actually provide an insightful point of view, you could actually broaden your vision, whether they agree with you or not.

Overall it’s all your choice but personally I’d find it extremely boring if every person agreed with me or had my same interests/ideas. It’s all about where you decide to focus on.

3

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6h6sib wrote

Oh don't get me wrong, my perspective has been very broadened by some of the discussions in places like this.

And goodness knows, life would be very boring if we all agreed. I've just decided that, clearly, this is the wrong forum to focus on AI development.

The concept of 'singularity' is just fundamentally incompatible with the concept of 'intelligence', as I see it, and it's become too exhausting and exasperating for me to keep trying to explain why.

I've accepted, now, that 'singularity' is just the name of this place and the overall prevalent attitude, so the likelihood of multi-modal, non-singular, potentially-AGI-someday AI, as a concept, being taken seriously here, seems fairly low.

Hanging around here to learn about AI seems equivalent to hanging around a Flat Earther subreddit to learn about geography; it might be entertaining, even informative, but the 'education' one gleans from it is dubious at best.

3

insectula t1_j6jru06 wrote

Understood. I would like to see more of that too, but we have what we have. As I said, I think it is a good resource to go through every morning, take what's interesting, and leave the rest. I mostly just look at the links and leave the discussions unless it's something that really strikes me.

3

LoquaciousAntipodean OP t1_j6laifh wrote

Yeah, that's what I'm learning. Getting too involved in certain spaces just generates drama and frustration, not discussion; 'walking softly' and avoiding fights with righteous mobs are the hardest tricks to learn for an enthusiastic novice.
