Here's the source: https://www.reuters.com/technology/apple-indefinitely-postpones-launch-ar-glasses-bloomberg-news-2023-01-18/

The company is struggling to make a truly lightweight product with at least the processing power and battery life capabilities of the iPhone and with providing large enough field of view that would satisfy users.

The radical techno-optimist were wrong once again. It takes many years for such devices to come out. I wasn't impressed by Google Glass, Microsoft HoloLens or Magic Leap. Even when Apple AR glasses are finally available, the first generation will be surely far from perfect. For now, we see a small step forward for laptops with the release of M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs.

That’s the glasses, the headset is still coming this year

I'm sure it's going to cost over two thousand dollars

The $3000 one releases this year but the more affordable one will release next year. It will cost about the price of an Iphone

With the two M2 chips that analysts believe it will have? I’d be surprised if it was less than $2500.

The radical techno optimists?? Who are you mad with?

That the technology for super light visors is not here yet. But it will, eventually.

Yeah, I still suspect it won't be till between 2028 to 2032 for when transistor density and battery technology enables AR glasses to meet market demands for performance and comfort.

The answer is a wire tether to a phone’s battery. It looks like Apple is going to do that with their VR headset

Interesting. Would be funny for them to basically bring back the headphone wire that they killed off.

Will be curious to see what works in the end. I'd personally love advanced AR once it's market ready.

Apparently the headset will have a magnetic disk that sticks to the phone and draws power that way, and it is less than half the weight of the Oculus Quest 2. I have a feeling it is going to be absolutely amazing, and everyone will want one, as it will give users amazing abilities: hands free map navigation, zoom capabilities, language translation, hands free message notification, etc.

We'll see I suppose. I'm skeptical about any AR that we can make today. Haha

Wrong once again, what a bold statement. Still its just a matter of time and optimalization of such technology. Also I wouldnt be surprised if they checked public opinion on this and were faced with negative feedback.

I just think that for decent AR glasses we will need to wait for the 2030s. But we will at least get decent smartphones this decade.

Honestly, i dont really see how smartphones could be better theyre already at peak changing almost nothing year to year. Weve been stuck with smartphones for 15 years at least, time to change the device.

IMHO the metaverse won't take off until direct input to the optic nerve is possible. These headsets feel like early 90s PDAs or tablets, visions of a future way ahead of their time.

civilrunner t1_j4xebe3 wrote

Granted this is AR, so not really metaverse.

Get a direct brain interference and it won't matter, it'll be possible to seamlessly go from one to the other.

The only reason a distinction is made at this time is due to technology limitations.

civilrunner t1_j4yrjeg wrote

True, but you don't need one for AR and well I agree that VR requires it.

Current AR is horrible, the laws of optics ensure it will always be horrible so long as we're stuck trying to make AR work through glasses on faces.

(Though IMHO we could get useful AR if the industry focused on making simpler solutions, unfortunately all the less ambitious but more realistic consumer AR companies are out of business now)

VR works well enough, and if displays can increase dpi some more while dropping prices, it may even grow its audience some.
