Just a tripod and the kit lens that came with the camera. With a little more time and tweaking I think I can get it a bit clearer.

That purple light at the bottom is beautiful I wonder what that is

I'm almost certain it's the Orion nebula.

You got it.

No, I think the neighbors installed one of those halogen yard lights.

What is this formation? Saw it last night. Is it Sag?

It's Orion's Belt and the Orion Nebula.

What’s your setup? I’ve been looking at getting into this myself.

It's the Panasonic Lumix G95D with a 12-60mm kit lens and a tripod. Going to try to get the most out of what I have before I get any more gear. The temptation is strong, though.

When I enlarge that on my phone, I can even see the shape of the Orion Nebula.
I wish I had equipment that good, and your skill.

You should try at 12mm, with like 20 second exposure time and a little more iso, you will get the milky way visible.
No need to zoom on stars, the more you get, the better.

Not sure if this was sarcastic but the Earth's rotation and a longer exposure creates that effect.

First time using a DLSR as well. Still trying to figure out the best mix of exposure, iso, and aperture. Gotta start somewhere.

Look for the mirror lock up.settings. this will release the shutter and you won't suffer vibration from pulling and slappingof the mirror. Happy hunting.

If you're not using a remote shutter definitely pick one up.

I can connect via Bluetooth and/or wifi to control it. I'll definitely use that next time.

You're doing great! The stars look sharp and in focus. Are you using a tripod or a tracking mount?
