Well, if you drove with my fiancé it would take a lot longer because she has to stop and pee every 20 fucking minutes

This is true. We have every intention of spending our marriage on the ground

The average distance from the earth to the moon is about 238,855 miles (~384,400 km).

Thanks for doing half the math for us!

384,000 km at 80 km/hour is about 4,800 hours, or 200 days.

So, the better part of a year.

I didn't want to "ruin" the fun part.

Anyhow, thank you for completing the math for us.

Why did i think it was closer? Or is it short to get to space?

TypingWithGlovesOn t1_iuyum50 wrote

Lots of people use 100 km as the beginning of "space." The ISS and other low Earth orbits are only about 400 km up. The moon is very much farther away

Thank you for the clarification.. I just thought I heard it takes like an hour to get to space by car or something like that

Which makes the fact that the James Webb Space Telescope is 1.5 million km away (1 million miles) that much more impressive.

how long would it take to drive to the moon, driving 80 km/h, stopping at a red light 230 times with 1/3 of the duration of the red light being 30 sek, 1/3 40 sek, 1/6 22 sek, 1/6 10 sek)? I’m not good at math, but I feel like you are

In theory, lets make it a basic road, straight to the moon, nonstop besides the red lights, acceleration is 2.417 m/s², d =207.14 m, perfectly fine Ford GT, you can add the 40,000 km to the equation and the needed speed for that period of time it takes to escape earths gravity, red lights were put there by Neil Armstrong, the lights are evenly distributed throughout the way (you do the math), you are not to obey the driving laws so no to the yellow lights nor are you allowed to look at your phone

[deleted] t1_iuyk1zn wrote

The deceleration thing doesn't really matter, because the 80 km/h is already an average speed so it's included. I also think it would be negligible.

Average:

3600 s/h • (384400 km / 80 km/h) + 230•(30 s +40 s +22 s+10 s ) = 15,683,460 s ≈ 4.356 h ≈ 182 days ≈ 0.5 years

384400 km is the average distance to the moon

There's actually a slight numerical error because I imputed 800 not 400 km, but I'll correct it. I might also do minimum and maximum distances.

I think the better question is how meany Ford GTs would it take to get there. Accounting for general maintenance and break downs (it is a ford) it's gonna take a bit longer than the 200 days
