Black holes don't "pull in" things like a vacuum. You have to be near them. Since space is expanding your scenario is unlikely. If you replace the entire milky way by a black hole with the same mass it would behave just like the milky way relative to nearby galaxies. They would be fine. Except for Andromeda because it's on a collision course with the Milky Way already.

This does make me feel better. It was just a random thought that occurs to me here & there which makes me panic. Just the thought that there is something outside the universe makes me panic. To find out that this infinite isn't really infinite would be absolutely crazy. I appreciate your answer tho!

s1ngular1ty2 t1_j0h4fxv wrote

There is nothing outside the universe by definition. It is expanding into itself. The distances between things are just getting larger. This is only where gravity doesn't have any influence. LIke between galaxies.

ElderWandOwner t1_j0hcz1k wrote

That's no where near fact, and the nature of it makes it likely unprovable even if it exists. So essentially it doesn't exist even if it does. Similar to pre big bang.

I find it hard to comprehend that something was always just here. Came from nothing, just always been here, and has shit happening inside of it which life came into existence.

I believe current theory is that the big bang was not the beginning, but our laws of physics break down to the point where we have no way of knowing what might have been before.

I also might be way off so take that with a grain of salt

Dead is dead, it doesn't make a fuck how you transition from the living state to the nonliving state. Your matter doesn't matter. Every book ends the same way- 'The End'.

Same! I'm Catholic but I believe that it doesn't necessarily have to be the Abrahamic God that could of created our existence. That same description of "God" can be attributed to anything greater than us. That's just my personal belief. I don't knock on anyone's beliefs because when it comes down to discussing that topic, there is never going to be "concrete proof"...my ideology is no more verifiable than yours & I respect that. Always nice to have a civil debate about that but people get too heated I notice. My friend is agnostic and we use to discuss things back and forth pleasantly.

physithespian t1_j0hej0r wrote

Yes! Because all gathered evidence that we have points to a single cohesive conclusion - that all matter is contained in the universe, the space between that matter is just expanding. We have zero evidence to suggest that there is anything outside of what we refer to as “the universe.”

There are certainly things outside of our light cone, which, for all practical purposes, are outside of our universe. If you imagine a flash of light from a specific place at a specific time, and that light traveling (say theoretically infinitely) outward in all directions, there will always be something outside of that realm of possible influence. Like if something is 100 light years away and it explodes the moment that I was born, and I live to be 99, the effects of that event will never reach me because nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.

2

Otfd t1_j0hfdjv wrote
