You are going to have to pick at least 1 woman, 1 PoC, probably a Canadian.

By outright announcing that a woman and a PoC would be picked, they’ve made it crystal clear that these astronaut qualities were most important. I think diversity is great, but making a big deal about it has made the selection process political.

During Apollo it was also an explicitly political choice to exclude these groups completely, so I think I’m fine with it. If they’re an astronaut they’re already incredibly competent.

From the current Astronaut Candidate class: I liked Anil Menon, Christina Birch, and Deniz Burnham.

This is based on my interactions with them during their stint in our shop for some hands-on training and has nothing to do with their qualifications and achievements.

I mean, there are plenty of examples of astronauts doing crazy shit. Like the one that drove from Texas to Florida in adult diapers for a love triangle thing.

Agreed, but he checks a lot of boxes and probably has some political "qualifications" in his favor. Realpolitik wise:

  • Vet with actual combat experience
  • Minority
  • Legit rags to "riches" story
  • Solid speaker
  • Not unattractive
  • Young enough to do a couple terms in lower offices and still be seen as a "youthful" candidate in later runs for bigger positions (reasonable to assume a Seal/MD/Astronaut will keep his physical/mental health well above average for at least a few decades)

If he walks on the moon, that adds a helluva feather in an already impressive cap for a political candidate. I have no idea if he has any desire to pursue that path at some point, but hard to imagine he's not on the political machine's radar as someone to push. And ultimately NASA's astronaut selection is leaned on for political purposes.

Here’s my prediction, I’m reasonably confident in this:

CDR: Vic Glover

Orion Pilot: Johnny Kim

HLS Pilot: Jessica Meir

International Mission Specialist: Alexander Gerst

Take this with a grain of salt, but it definitely fits in with rumors I’ve heard from industry people (especially Orion people have told me every flight will have an international on board)

Glover and Meir would be the two that would land

Jonny Kim. Being a SEAL and then going to school and becoming a doctor show two very different kinds of the right stuff. Both require incredible dedication - and in the case of becoming an MD, the perseverance has to last for many years, until you're board-certified.

SpaceInMyBrain t1_j11x2kh wrote

He and others will be flying plenty by the end of 2025, which is the most optimistic timeline for Artemis 3. That's time for a lot of 6 month rotations on the ISS. Arty 3 may carry one astronaut from the new class and one "old" astronaut.

3

SpaceInMyBrain t1_j11y391 wrote

A major question underlying this: What skills are transferrable from the ISS to a Moon landing? Will experience count? An astronaut who's been on an ISS 6 month rotation will have spent less than 2 days in a spacecraft (that's not the ISS.) Working in zero-g for 6 months isn't really relevant to Artemis until later missions involving Gateway. The most applicable skill will be spacewalks. Very different from moonwalks but both involve operating in a spacesuit for 6 hours and more.

The biggest skill set will be the ability to master skill sets, especially disparate ones. The astronauts who demonstrate this best will be the best candidates. I nominate Jonny Kim, he mastered the skills of being a SEAL and a physician.

NASA relies on government funding so they need to jerk politicians in whatever they ask if they want funds, and diversity is all the current rage in US politics.

So you just tell them yes to whatever they say, take the billions and run before they start asking for specifics regarding the technology that's going to be used, it's already enough that they demanded the SLS to reuse old Space Shuttle tech just to prevent their buddies from losing their jobs.

ioncloud9 t1_j13sz2n wrote

No because your pool of astronauts are all qualified for the job, otherwise they wouldnt be astronauts. Their mission assignments might be based on a particular specialty they have, or previous performance on a mission.

It is also an inherently political decision. Seeing as they are all very close in abilities, picking one over the other isnt going to make or break your mission, so you have the flexibility to make whatever picks that satisfy all of your mission objectives including political objectives.

I dont really have a problem with that. I do have a problem with only putting 2 astronauts on the surface for the first mission instead of 4, and continuing to use a compact sedan to get the astronauts to the moon only for them to land in an apartment building.
