Wow! Is that orions belt or what is those 3 super bright stars for constellation?

theillini19 t1_j5e0bi9 wrote

Yep, you can see Orion's belt, Orion's sword, and Betelgeuse towards the top.

tehrmuk t1_j5egx7n wrote

And the three stars... hanging out of... the area below Orion's Belt... in the, uhhhhh... area where Orion's crotch would be...

darrellbear t1_j5fbnpa wrote

That is Orion's sword. The Orion Nebula is in the sword, one of the grandest things to look at with a telescope in the entire sky.

Those three bright ones in a row, that's Orion's belt. The big red one up and left, that's Beetlejuice, his right shoulder.

And those bright clump of stars under neath the belt?

That's Orion's p****

Lol! Well great minds think i like .. Coz my instant reaction was that is obviously not a sword..

Kjleone19 t1_j5i2sei wrote

Idk why, but I’ve always seen the belt and the stars below it (in this picture) as a teddy bear, where the belt is the head/ears.

Am I the only one?

Mysterious-Spare6260 t1_j682hyv wrote

Oh my..i needed to investigate this matter and now i indeed see a bear or a cat that stretches out like they do when attacking something when playing.

And besides that i now see catfaces all over the space constellations..

We moved to the dark countryside of Cambridgeshire last year, from the well lit suburbs of Essex.

I’ve spent many a night just standing in my back garden staring at the stars, it just never seems to get old.

My boyfriend bought me a telescope for Christmas which I’m just getting to grips with. The first time I was able to spot the Orion Nebula* was.. something else.

*kinda. Still getting things dialled in, it was more a case of initially seeing a space of “not stars”..

It doesn't take much to make a massive change to the nights sky. I'm only 10 mins from where I used to be (Norwich) and the difference is ... Well a bit.obvious from the photo.

Good luck with the telescope, it's the kind of thing that might make a birthday list.

I know nothing of your finances, but starter telescopes are much less expensive than I realised. I’m kicking myself that I’d always assumed the starting prices to be in the thousands when you actually only have to pay a couple of hundred.

Sure, it’s not fantastic but it’s a fairly small outlay. I can’t even begin to put into words how cool it was to see Jupiter and 3 moons. It was only a big dot with 3 smaller dots alongside it, but it got me hooked.

I’m now putting together a budget for my next upgrade.

ProfessorEsoteric OP t1_j5eitx0 wrote

Okay that's great to hear, it feels like it may also turn into my most expensive hobby. Any sub-reddits that might have some good starter advice?

1

tan_blue t1_j5fauzs wrote

There are r/telescope and r/telescopes. Do a search for "starter" or "advice" and if you can't find an answer, or can't narrow down which telescope to get, ask them. They'd probably be happy to help!

In the meantime, if you don’t have some already, I highly recommend getting some binoculars! They’re a great and inexpensive way to explore the sky in greater detail (much better quality option here). They won’t show you Saturn’s rings, but even from a city they allow you to see Jupiter’s four brightest moons, craters on our moon, hundreds of stars & satellites invisible to the naked eye, Venus’ crescent phase, Uranus, Neptune, etc. From darker skies you can see even more of course, like the Andromeda galaxy, Orion Nebula, awesome star clusters like the Pleiades, comets (when applicable- like right now) etc. Plus, they're great for daytime views and they’ll still be incredibly useful if/when you have a telescope.

You're not really seeing a night sky if you're not seeing the Milky Way with naked eyes. Knowing that you're now actually seeing a glimpse of the huge galaxy we live in and that this was a regular mundane sight for everyone before electrical light pollution is humbling.

ProfessorEsoteric OP t1_j5ej0y0 wrote

I got turned onto it when I was 18, up Mount Washington camping and the galactic centre was visible in the sky. We had coffees and found a local guide to talk us through what we could see above. Never looked up with the same eyes since.

Orion, stunning right ? What's better than enjoying nature in a slow paced life ?

I'd never go back to the city. The country is where it's at :)

We moved from Orlando to a new neighborhood in Davenport and the 1st yr was a dream to watch the sky now they did like 4 new neighborhoods and we barely see stars anymore 😔 congrats on the view

Enjoy the view! ✨

I think I should do that too , peaceful nights without any parasitic noise, a myriad colors clear starry sky without any pollution, just you, the nature, ur telescope and some lofi ..

ProfessorEsoteric OP t1_j5e5sjr wrote

I'm biased as I grew up in villages/countryside so it has been a proper goal to get back to it. Hope you find yourself a good spot to break out the LoFi

This is the only reason I’d live 30+ min from the closest grocery store.

2

ProfessorEsoteric OP t1_j5fom0o wrote

Ah I'm a 5 mins walk or a 7 min drive, so much less of a compromise.

I'd want it to be even darker for 30 mins XD

2

RunLoud6534 t1_j5fsabn wrote

That’s really nice actually. I have only ever lived in a city either tucson or Phoenix and so when I think of moving somewhere the sky is visible I think of people driving 20-30 min for their groceries or only having 1 option for grocery shopping.

Edit: I could capitalize tucson but if you lived there or even visited you’d understand why autocorrect won’t capitalize it.

I think this kinda thing is very different US Vs UKz we have a bit more village life, or so it feels from reading the internet.

You don’t necessarily have to choose. I’m <1 km from the local grocery store and have statistically some of the darkest skies on earth.

I get such a thrill when it's a clear night sky. Living within so many miles of a major city obviously robs my view, which is why taking a road trip to a good stargazing spot is on my bucket list.
