__Dave_ t1_jdebujo wrote

That isn’t really a comparable situation. You’re talking about a personal relationship. You have many (more important) ways of supporting your daughter that don’t involve signs and pins, etc.

Additionally, there’s a huge difference between not actively doing something and refusing to do it when asked. Like you said, there is no expectation or demand for you to do those things, obviously there are more important things, but if she asked would you honestly refuse such a simple gesture? Would she be satisfied with “I just don’t want to”?

As for players’ reasons. Sure we might not be entitled to it, but like it or not they’re public figures and people are going to ask. It comes with the gig and their sizeable paycheque.

−5

NiceCrispyMusic t1_jddhpdr wrote

>some people just don’t want to do it. That should be enough of an answer.

That’s true when it comes to the players’ personal lives but not when they’re suiting up for their job.

Like, a player is getting paid by the org to rep what the org reps.

If the team wants to put a “wish.com” patch on your jersey after you signed a 4 year 50M dollar deal, you gotta wear the jersey and the patch. If a player doesn’t like the design of the New Jerseys, it doesn’t matter that they “don’t like it”. Still gotta wear it. …PERIOD.

This isn’t any different.

−8

duguy5 t1_jddk6sl wrote

The team is the one that is saying the players don’t have to wear it in this case though…

7

NiceCrispyMusic t1_jddkp2y wrote

−5

duguy5 t1_jddoman wrote

So you gave your opinion and backed it up with irrelevant evidence

2

NiceCrispyMusic t1_jddq19q wrote

Irrelevant evidence? …the guy I responded to says it should be enough if a player doesn’t WANT to wear something.

I cited evidence that proves time and time again that a players desires with regards to what’s on their jersey hasn’t been a valid enough reason for them to not wear their team’s jersey therfore a rainbowed number isn’t any different.

It seems like you simply have poor reading comprehension or just want to argue.

3

finnjakefionnacake t1_jddhhk1 wrote

look, i agree that no one should be forced to wear something they don't want to wear (although many people have to wear things like uniforms for their jobs, but you know what i mean). but when we are in a world in which people are trying to legislate trans people out of existence, attacking drag for no reason, and the most recent GOP party platform still is against gay marriage or gay people being able to adopt, then being vocal and open in your show of support really is a powerful thing.

That aside -- I'm sure your daughter does not expect you to do any of that, and I wouldn't expect my parents to either, but I'm sure she wouldn't be upset to see you do so.

I really don't think you understand what Freedom of Speech is. Even when you ignore the part about being a government to individual thing. Freedom of Speech does not mean you can't be ridiculed or criticized. In fact that's literally the point of Freedom of Speech, it is your right that you can choose to wear or not wear something while it is mine right to ridicule you.

So... let the Russian players abstain from wearing them then.

Some teams are wearing them but allowing players to choose not to. Correct?

I am unaware of any teams that are forcing everybody to wear them (please correct me if I'm wrong). I would assume the players union would step in if a team even tried that.

Yet teams are comfortable with the blanket "nobody is wearing them" decision.

Disappointing. If players should be given the choice not to wear them, they should be given the choice TO wear them as well.
