The newly renamed "Tom Brady, Donkey of the Day" award

I really don't understand the sudden uproar with him comparing football to war/the military. It's been that way forever.

Actual Brady quote: “I almost look at like a football season like you’re going away on deployment in the military, and it’s like, man, here I go again.”

Random examples:

"It's a war of attrition." "Battle in the trenches." "Throwing bombs" "Going to battle"

Many terms used in game are either adopted from the military or to it.

"Red zone" "End around" "Blitz"

"Pro football is like nuclear warfare. There are no winners, only survivors." -Frank Gifford

Eh, his analogy was way more tone deaf than the other ones. Like, you go home to a 20 room mansion, or a world class hotel if you're on the road, when you're "deployed"... Give me a fucking break

Cap_Tight_Pants t1_itn4v8t wrote

Yeah. Like compararing football to a nuclear fucking holocaust is much less "tone-deaf".

Or people weren't so easily offended back then.

ihavethebestmarriage t1_it7c2rr wrote

Never use analogies. People will always focus on why the 2 things being likened are not alike.

[deleted] t1_itakg3n wrote

Yeah using analogies to win arguments is about as reliable as drinking a glass of water through a straw

That's like me blaming owls for my bad analogies

Or blaming similes for your bad metaphors.

Pavona t1_it95v72 wrote

at least don't compare it to something like a military deployment (especially when you look at salaries vs. job importance)... why not a traveling salesperson, or band on tour...?

jgiffin t1_itaaczk wrote

“Tom Brady compares his job to that of a traveling salesman, to the outrage of hard- working Americans on twitter.”

thisplaceisnotforyou t1_it9itz8 wrote

That’s not the message here. That’s such a reductive way of looking at things. Be better than that

udubdavid t1_itaqxmc wrote

I understood what he meant. He just meant being away from your family is like being on deployment. He's not actually comparing playing football to being in the military.

55

cannondave t1_itb9bu3 wrote

And if he did why the fuck be offended. You can't compare things to military things, is it sacred?

15

steeltowndude t1_itbcbfv wrote

I think we all know the crowd he's apologizing to. The same people that call everyone with real problems "snowflakes" but cry and play the victim at every chance they get, no matter how imaginary the problem.

ChronoMD t1_itb2zct wrote

I have never liked Brady, but as someone who grew up in a military and sports family, there are not a lot of better comparisons in this respect.

thepokemonGOAT t1_itb54x6 wrote

That’s what a comparison is, my friend. One thing is like another thing.

Greyman-Actual t1_ita84bs wrote

Who cares? We all know the context in which it was said. Ironically, the most “outraged” vets haven’t deployed or TB did more in one or two games than they did an entire year+ deployment with a greater chance of injury. Grow the hell up 😂

Bro I was thinking if I got sacked in the NFL I would absolutely die lol but desert life was lucrative. Different folks different strokes and all that.

Greyman-Actual t1_itbb8t5 wrote

I guess lol. It’s just hilarious to me that people are losing their shit over this

Mnemonic22 t1_itau06h wrote

Anybody upset with what he said is stupid. The fact that he felt the need to apologize is stupid.

CyborgBee t1_itbc1yk wrote

This is insane, but the US has a 100ft boner for its military despite the fucking awful things it repeatedly does, and thinks American Football is just a fun game despite the massive long term physical and mental damage it does to the players, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I am a proud Brady hater, but I'll defend him here: NFL players suffer heavily during the course of a season, so this analogy is fine, and anyone whining about how he's 'disrespecting the troops' should consider that disrespecting the troops is something you should do when said troops are off slaughtering the population of another country again.

sreyaNotfilc t1_itbfudu wrote

Seriously, these (and other athletes / entertainers) are trained at a young age to hopefully be put into a fish bowl so that they can break down their bodies all the while being away from friends and family months at a time. But because its for our amusement and they make lots of money, folks assume that they don't suffer from anything.

Stewy_434 t1_itbpnj3 wrote

Bruh. As a veteran, who fucking cares. No rational person is sitting here going, "What the FUCK did he just say?? How dare he!" It's only irrational, bored people.

Let's win some football games so we can stop hearing about dumb stuff. Reminds me of F1's "silly season".
