Good to use a European based ref.. the South American ones have been disturbing average by comparison.. maybe VAR team could get their act together too.. too many inexplicable decisions.. Morocco robbed a of a definite pen yesterday for example.. England too etc

Why do most American football refs have a grandpa bod?

22

Lucked0ut t1_j0dyl1s wrote

Because it’s a part time job and most of them don’t run much even during a game because of the size of the crew and positions. These soccer refs probably run 6-7 miles a game.

csappey t1_j0dzr3h wrote

If I remember correctly the goal line technology sends a signal to the watch when a goal is scored. The mic is used for communication with the other officials including VAR. The goal line technology doesn’t need another official to tell the referee that goal line technology has detected a goal.

Anyone that knows football more than I do, is there a specific reason for two watches?

1

chuckmilam t1_j0e3fwf wrote

When I was a (low-level, admittedly) referee, I'd wear two watches in case one failed, or if I forgot to start one of them. Funny how it's easy to forget one watch, but not two, especially when you're trying to keep them both in sync.

He screwed Australia in that game. We were Cleary the dominant side all game and he just handed it to the Argentinians because FIFA wanted the powerhouses like Australia out of the tournament.

In all seriousness though, I felt that Aus did pretty well against Argentina. We just don't have a 'killer striker' who can change the flow of a game.

I didn't watch France vs Denmark very closely but the refereeing seemed fine there. In Argentina vs Australia i felt like the ref got fooled too often by Argentina's diving (especially Acuna) but other than that was ok.

This ref is probably the least controversial choice they could've made which I'm fine with.

angeloj87 t1_j0ejm8b wrote

I wish pierre luigi collina could’ve been physically fit to referee the final. It’s very obvious fifa influenced argentinas bracket. Basically gave them a free ride. And despite narrowly getting upset, the refs made favorable calls to Argentina. Brazil was the only threat and I would’ve loved to see them dance after defeating them. That penalty with Croatia completely set their morale of course and of course, favored Argentina. Collina will not take any bs from either side, or get influenced from fifa. He’s a man of respect and would not let shit slide or give favorable calls. I predict Argentina will get two penalties, plus a Messi golden goal. France two goals and a suspiciously denied pen or regular goal.
