Wonder what he brought for food

Buhalterija OP t1_j1wg5zl wrote

He had a youtube channel that got hacked 1 day after he left (they're working on bringing it back). In it he went deeper on his preparation. He took food equivalent of 140 days, however the trip is planned to finish in 110 days. The rest is for emergency. Most of it is calories packed food like nuts, protein, oatmeal snacks, etc. He also took supplements and drugs for various possible ilnesses.

Once his youtube channel is back - I will watch it again and summarize more details.

Dude is rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, and his Youtube channel gets hacked… 2022 problems.

Dose he have a crew flowing him in another craft?

browsybrows t1_j1y5kr0 wrote

Nope. To achieve world record he needs to row all the way unsupported

Fuuuuck that’s scary, he’s a braver man than I am. I would be terrified of storms/a rogue wave and never being seen again.

From his explanation I understood that the boat he is in is quite well equipped for such a trip. It automatically balances out and turns over on the correct side in case of the wave flipping it. Aurimas also uses a piece of rope connecting him to the boat at all times in case of him falling out. There is also a solar panel powering multiple advanced GPS systems, radio and electronic compass. He also has an emergency bag that has radio anchor capable of transmitting an emergency signal with its location. Overall talking about his personality - he isn't one of those guys who would do something spontaneous for likes. He has quite an experience and sports background. From his interviews before the trip it felt he knows what he is doing and has what it takes. I hope he will make it happen.

Rogue waves aren’t the most dangerous things out there besides storms. Unruly seas are unpredictable, and some bad waves at the wrong time give you bigger troubles than a rogue wave.

Rogue waves aren’t toooo dangerous for him, since his craft is so small.

Isn't it nuts to do this in winter (other than the fact that it's already nuts to be doing this)?

Buhalterija OP t1_j1wl4m7 wrote

Good question, maybe someone else will be able to go deeper on this, but as far as I understand - in the path he is taking winter doesn't mean cold weather.

He is relatively south in there northern hemisphere going from ayomonte Spain to Miami Florida. Weather in Ayomonte is high 60s for the highs and fifty for the low. Miami is warmer. I don't know that you would want it much warmer than that, and it is going to continue to get warmer as time goes on.

You have to consider water temperature as well. If it is less than 10C and god forbid something happens he can’t stay in the water for too long. I’m sure he’s prepared for all of that.

Is the goal to end up in Brazil? Hope he accomplishes this incredible task, every time someone goes out to sea alone like this, it always ends poorly

Buhalterija OP t1_j1wirbd wrote

He is finishing in Miami. The path he is taking southwards is strategic to get into the water current that would ease up the 2nd part of the trip. He was researching this possibility for 2 years and preparing for the last year in Lithuanian lakes and Baltic sea daily. Hopefully he will end up alright. The boat he is in was purchased from Jasmine Harrison. She went through a similar trip at 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. That distance is 3000mi (4800km). Aurimas is taking a different path that creates a bigger arc.

Edit: typos

I gotta be honest, if I made a trek like that, I’d have a super hard time selling the boat

I was confused for a second as I read as Lithuania. I was quite sure a country could not be rowing itself across the Atlantic.

His “gps” data shows elevation. I seen one as high as 2.7m and as low as - 1.5m.

I hope for his sake the readings are off. Otherwise I image it must be quite wavy.

Edit: just found a reading of 6.5 m. Wow that’s a big wave
