i got an expired tags ticket last year and all i had to do was go to court, explain why i had expired tags (i used the good ol "i'm in college and my parents take care of this stuff and i wasn't aware of the deadline" excuse...which was true), show the judge that i updated my registration, and i had the charge dropped and i just needed to pay court fees ($45).

avoiding court isn't really optional and isn't worth skipping for such a minor thing. i would just get it over with and if you bring updated paperwork, hopefully the judge will be nice and do the same thing.

tldr: yes you have to go to court and pay the charge and court fee

The court fees are $45?! Yeah the only problem is I can't afford to actually get my tags renewed at the moment. I wasn't planning on not going to court, but since all they clearly want is my money I was hoping I could just give them the money to leave me alone lol.

If you don’t pay and you don’t show up, you’ll end up with a warrant. You’re better off showing up and taking care of it.

Oh yeah I always planned on taking care of it. I was just hoping I didn't have to take a day and go down to court in person.

Well if you go online, to casenet, you should be able to pay for it up until your initial appearance. You have until midnight the day before your court date to pay it online, if you wanna go that route.
